SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Mia Ramirez netted the go-ahead goal in the 83
rd minute and
Kylene Monaghan scored five minutes later for an insurance goal in Sewanee's 3-1 triumph over Spalding University in women's soccer action here Friday evening in the first match of the season for both teams at Puett Field.
Morgan Cheynet put the Tigers in front, redirecting a deflected ball near the penalty spot for a goal in the 18
th minute, her first score since October 21, 2023. Cheynet missed all of last season with an injury.
Sewanee was unable to find a second goal in the first half or the first 25 minutes of the second period, with Spalding finding an equalizer from Emma Livingston, who took a throw-in from Madison Dziedic, turned a fired a long shot from the left side into the upper right corner, knotting the match in the 70
th minute.
The Tigers looked like they might draw but a great run down the rightside from
Kristina Wilkerson set-up the eventual game-winner. Wilkerson's cross clipped off the legs of
Susie Whitsett and right to Ramirez, who fired a shot into the upper right corner in the 83
rd minute.
Monaghan then put an exclamation point on the season opener with a left-footed blast from the top of the box in the 88
th minute on an assist from Whitsett, closing out the 3-1 win.
Sewanee goalkeeper
Avery Kievit made one save and faced five total shots. Spalding's Sophie Young-Neawedde collected two saves against 14 total shots from the Tigers.
Sewanee faces Farmingdale State at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Puett Field.
