SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Nathan Vanhoeve collected four saves and Sewanee played to a scoreless draw against Montclair State in men's soccer action here Friday afternoon in the first match of the season for both teams.
The Tigers outshot the Red Hawks, 10-9, in a physical match that included 11 yellow cards and 20 total fouls between the two teams.
Montclair State's Jake Winchock got a great chance less than two minutes into the match, with Vanhoeve making a diving save on a shot from the left side of the box.
The Tigers nearly scored in the ninth minute, with
Isaac Rasheed winning a ball just inside the 18-yard box, but his left-footed shot hit the right post.
The teams played up-and-down through the middle of the half before
Grayson White's shot was saved in the 37
th minute, a 3-on-1 chance for Sewanee that Montclair goalkeeper Diesel Fiore knocked away. Montclair State outshot the Tigers, 5-3, in the period.
Tyler Scott's header on a free kick bounced just left of the post midway through the second half for the Tigers. Vanhoeve collected two saves in the final 45 minutes, the first one on a deflected shot from Montclair's Max Perry.
The Tigers host 18
th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Puett Field, the second of seven straight home matches to begin the season.
