Theron advances to NCAA singles second round; Falls in doubles with Wicklund

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund opened competition at the NCAA Division III Individual Championships on Friday, with Theron competing in singles and the duo pairing up for doubles.

Theron, the No. 6 seed in singles, began his tournament with a hard-fought win over Emil Grantcharov of the University of Chicago. After earning an early break, Theron claimed the first set 6-3. Grantcharov responded with a 6-4 win in the second to force a deciding set. Both players held serve through the third, leading to a match tiebreak. Theron jumped ahead 5-2, and though Grantcharov leveled the score at 5-5, Theron won the next two points and sealed the match with a serve-and-volley finish to advance.

In the second round, Theron faced Tufts' Javier Gonzalez. The senior dropped the first set 6-4 but bounced back to win the second by the same score. For the second time that day, Theron was pushed to a third-set tiebreak. He fell behind 1-6 but rallied with four straight points before Gonzalez clinched the match off his serve.

Later in the day, Theron and Wicklund squared off against Gonzalez and partner Vuk Vuksanovic in the first round of doubles. After both teams traded holds early, Tufts secured a break at 3-3 and went on to take the opening set 6-4. The Jumbos carried their momentum into the second set, with a 6-1 win to advance.

Theron wrapped up a standout singles season with a 21-3 record and another All-American accolade, while he and Wicklund concluded their doubles campaign at 20-6, reaching the NCAA first round.
