Tigers Fall in 11 Innings to No. 16 Centre in SAA Tournament Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Charlie Teel went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, but Sewanee fell to No. 16 Centre in heartbreaking fashion, 9-8 in 11 innings, during the opening round of the SAA Baseball Tournament Friday night.

Blake Pou added two hits and an RBI, while Sebastian Leinberger drove in a pair as the Tigers erased an early five-run deficit before ultimately falling on a wild pitch in extra innings.

The Colonels struck quickly with a leadoff double and an RBI single to start the game, then added four more runs on three straight RBI singles to grab a 5-0 advantage in the bottom of the first.

From there, Sewanee starter Matt Munn settled in, striking out the side in the second and escaping a jam in the third with a pair of flyouts to right.

The Tigers (18-16) responded in the fourth. Tyler Pinson led off with a triple, and Alden Wright drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Teel's two-run single to right put Sewanee on the board, and back-to-back RBI hits from Aidan Petrocco and Pou gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead just before a nearly two-hour lightning delay halted the action.

After the delay, Centre reclaimed the lead in the fifth with a solo home run and a two-RBI double, going ahead 8-6. But Sewanee wasn't done.

In the sixth, Pou's two-out single and a hit-by-pitch to Zach Fortman set the table. A fielding error allowed Pou to score, and Leinberger followed with a two-run double to left-center, tying the game at 8-8 before being tagged out trying to stretch it into a triple.

Ben Weiser was effective in relief, entering in the sixth and working around a baserunner with a double play. Though Centre tied the game again in the seventh on another solo homer, Weiser limited the damage by inducing a fielder's choice and catching a runner stealing to end the inning.

Both teams had chances to win it late. Sewanee left the go-ahead run on third in the tenth, and Centre stranded the winning run in scoring position in the ninth.

In the 11th, Centre led off with a double and moved the runner to third on a fly ball. After a pair of walks loaded the bases, the Colonels walked off with the win on a wild pitch.

Sewanee will face Centre again in an elimination game on Saturday, May 3, with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
