Tigers collect senior day win over Transylvania, 21-5

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee women's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day in style with a dominant 21-5 win over Transylvania on Saturday afternoon at Puett Field.

Sally Herrington led the Tigers with five points on three goals and two assists, while also contributing three caused turnovers and a ground ball. Claire Saverino, Erika Bolcar, and Marlin Price each added four points in the win.

Sewanee's defense was active all game, forcing 15 turnovers and holding the Pioneers to just nine shots. Brooke Sigmon and Herrington led the way with three caused turnovers apiece. Clara Earley and Kennedy Harcourt added two each, while Saverino, Elizabeth Muller, Winnie Pajcic, Sally Whitehead, and Izzo Palmer each tallied one. Pajcic led the Tigers with three ground balls, and five other players recorded two each: Sigmon, Harcourt, Earley, Helen Newcomb, and Lilly Jordan.

Alex Kelly paced Sewanee with five draw control wins while Pajcic added four, and Sigmon and Harcourt collected three apiece.

Saverino opened the scoring off a feed from Herrington, then returned the favor minutes later by assisting Morgan Boylan. After Transylvania tied the game with two quick goals, Herrington put the Tigers back in front with a free-position score. Pajcic then made a momentum-shifting play—causing a turnover, scooping the ground ball, and finishing with a goal. Sigmon closed out the first quarter with a man-up goal from Price to give Sewanee a 5-2 lead.

Ella Townsend got the Tigers started in the second quarter with a goal from Muller. Bolcar followed with a free-position strike and then assisted Herrington just over a minute later. After a Transylvania goal, Izzo Palmer forced a turnover, setting up a goal by Price off a Saverino assist. Bolcar capitalized on another Transy miscue to net her second of the day, and Saverino soon added her second goal, assisted by Alexa Berg. Transylvania added a man-up goal late in the half, but Price answered with her second score, giving Sewanee a 12-4 lead at the break.

The Tigers picked up where they left off in the third quarter. Kelly won the opening draw, and Boylan assisted Herrington for her third goal. Despite being a player down after a green card, Harcourt made a huge individual play—causing a turnover, collecting the ground ball, clearing the ball, and scoring. Transylvania responded with a man-up goal, but Sewanee closed the quarter strong with back-to-back goals from Sofia Bean and Price.
Sigmon opened the final quarter with a draw control, and Muller scored twice in quick succession—first off a feed from Whitehead, then from Berg. Bolcar added another goal assisted by Herrington, and Finley Connors made it 20-5 with a score from Berg. Whitehead caused a turnover late in the game, and Pearse Connell connected with Boylan for the final goal of the day.

Sewanee improves to 13-0 on the season and will travel to face Hendrix on April 12. The Tigers then return home for their regular-season finale against Centre on April 20.
