SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Hannah Wilson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five RBIs with a double and a homer,
Maggie Barker added three hits and
Ansley Giffin drove in two runs, as Sewanee scored six times in the final two innings in an 11-3 victory over Centre in softball action here Saturday, helping the Tigers win the series.
Sewanee (9-20, 3-6 SAA) won 2-of-3 games from the Colonels over the weekend after splitting a doubleheader Friday.
Wilson hit a two-run homer in the third inning, singled home a run in the fifth and belted a two-run double off the wall in leftfield that plated two runs in the sixth, ending the game early. Barker singled three times and scored a pair of runs while Giffin's infield single in the first and RBI double down the leftfield line in the fifth were part of an 11-hit attack for the Tigers.
That all backed up Reagan Huskey (6-11) in the circle, who gave up three runs, one earned, on five hits in six innings. She did not walk a batter, hit two and struck out six.
Kennedy Cawdill (1-9), the first of three pitchers for the Colonels (4-24, 2-10), suffered the loss, allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Layne Ogle collected two of Centre's five hits in the game.
Kira Mashburn led off the game with a double off the wall in leftcenter for the Colonels and moved to third on Madalyn Irwin's sacrifice bunt. Ogle's double to right plated a run, but Huskey struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning without further damage.
Abbie Buckner drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning and
Sydney Tackett was hit with one out. The two runners advanced on a passed ball and Giffin's grounder up the middle went off the glove of Cawdill, with a run coming across.
Giffin stole second before
Madilyn Parker hit a chopper into the hole on the leftside. She beat the throw, which got away at first, allowing both runners to score on the play for a 3-1 advantage.
Barker singled to leadoff the third for the Tigers and with one out, Wilson belted a two-run homer to leftcenter, her first of the year, extending the lead to 5-1.
Emily Lammers was hit to start the fourth for the Colonels and with one out, Caroline Unruh reached on an error. Cawdill lined out to first before Jada Challiss grounded to second.
Grace Black fielded the ball but was unable to make a throw, with the ball falling out of her hand and then behind her, allowing both runners to come across, making it a 5-3 contest.
Sewanee added to the lead in the fifth with a leadoff single from Barker and pinch-runner Sadie Meachum went to second on a wild pitch. Wilson followed with an RBI single to left and took second on the throw to the plate. Giffin then doubled down the leftfield line, a little blooper off the end of the bat just over the third baseman's head, plating another run.
Cain added a solo homer to rightcenter to start the sixth for the Tigers, stretching the advantage to 8-3.
Buckner beat out an infield single and Barker doubled off the wall in leftcenter, putting runners on second and third. Tackett's squeeze bunt worked to perfection, with Buckner hook-sliding into the plate to avoid the tag. Wilson then doubled off the wall in left, scoring two runs for an 11-3 victory.
Sewanee travels to Berry College for a three-game series Tuesday and Wednesday and ends the regular season at home next weekend with three games against Hendrix College beginning Saturday at 2 p.m.
