Softball drops doubleheader at Berry

SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Sewanee softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Berry College on Tuesday, closing out their last conference road series.

In the first game of the day, the Tigers found themselves in an early hole after Berry put up five runs in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on a hit-by-pitch, passed ball, and a pair of Sewanee errors. The Vikings tacked on two more runs in the fourth before closing out the scoring with a two-run homer in the sixth.

Sewanee's lone run came in the fifth inning. Hannah Wilson led off with a double to left center, and pinch runner Sadie Meacham advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on Madilyn Parker's RBI single to center field.

Wilson and Parker collected the only hits for the Tigers. Reagen Huskey took the loss in the circle, allowing six earned runs over four innings. Hanna Hollis pitched the final 1.2 innings in relief.

In the second game, the Tigers were held scoreless and limited to three hits by Berry's pitching duo. Despite reaching base in five of seven innings, Sewanee was unable to capitalize on its opportunities.

Abbie Buckner, Sydney Tackett, and Grace Black each recorded a hit for Sewanee. Tackett also reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball, but the Tigers couldn't push a run across.

Ansley Giffin threw a complete game, giving up just five hits and two walks with one strikeout over six innings of work.

Berry used timely extra-base hits, including a triple and two doubles, to score once in the first and twice more in the fourth before adding an insurance run in the fifth.

Sewanee faces Berry for the final game of the series on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
