Softball splits Friday twinbill against Centre

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Reagan Huskey tossed a complete-game shutout and Abbie Buckner and Ansley Giffin each recorded two hits as Sewanee softball split a Friday doubleheader with Centre. The Tigers claimed a 5-0 win in the opener before falling 5-1 in Game 2.

Huskey was in command throughout the first game, scattering four hits and striking out six in seven innings to earn her fifth win of the season. The sophomore didn't allow a Centre runner past third base and worked around three walks to preserve the shutout.

Sewanee broke through in the fourth inning when Grace Black drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on a sacrifice and a groundout, and scored on Sydney Tackett's RBI groundout to second. The Tigers added insurance in the sixth with a four-run burst. Buckner led off with a single and scored on Hannah Wilson's RBI double. Tackett drew a walk, and Maggie Barker followed with an RBI single to right. With runners on the corners, Tackett stole home, and a throwing error allowed pinch runner Kaylie Smith to cross the plate, giving Sewanee a 5-0 lead.

In Game 2, Centre opened the scoring with a two-out triple and RBI single in the first inning. Sewanee answered in the bottom of the second as Madilyn Parker drove in Huskey with a single to right center to tie the game at 1-1.

The Colonels reclaimed the lead in the third with a sacrifice fly, but the Tigers executed a relay to tag out a runner at the plate and limit the damage. Centre loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth, but Huskey—pitching in relief—induced a popup and a fielder's choice before an error allowed the go-ahead run to score. A strikeout ended the inning with three runners stranded.

Hanna Hollis pitched 2.2 innings in relief, striking out one and inducing five fly-outs. Buckner took the loss, allowing two earned runs over 2.1 innings. Hanna Hollis pitched 2.2 innings, striking out one and inducing five fly-outs.

Centre added two more runs in the seventh to seal the 5-1 victory.

The Tigers and Colonels wrap up their three-game series on Saturday at Noon.
