Game Recap: Baseball |

Late rally falls short as Sewanee drops road game to Covenant

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Blake Pou posted four hits and Charlie Teel added three, but Covenant scored four runs in the fourth and sixth innings in an 11-10 victory over Sewanee in baseball action on Tuesday in Lookout Mountain, Ga.

The Tigers struck early, putting up three runs in the first inning. Aidan Petrocco drew a walk to lead off the game, and Pou followed with a double to center. Will Jennewein reached on an error that allowed the first run to score. Alden Wright then laced a two-RBI single through the left side to give Sewanee a quick 3-0 lead.

In the third, Pou opened the inning with his second double of the day. Zach Fortman added a single, and Jennewein drove in a run with a single to right. Although the Tigers were tagged out at second and home on the next play, they extended their lead to 4-0.

Covenant got on board on the bottom of the third, taking advantage of a single and two Tiger errors to score a run. Sewanee answered again in the fourth, with singles from Owen Andress and Petrocco setting the stage for Teel, who ripped a two-RBI double to left center to push the lead to 6-1.

The momentum shifted in the bottom of the fourth, when the Scots plated four runs on three hits to cut the deficit to one. They tied the game in the fifth with an RBI single and surged ahead in the sixth, scoring four more runs, and plated another in the seventh to take an 11-6 lead.
The Tigers put together a final push in the top of the ninth. After a leadoff single by Will Jennewein and a walk to pinch hitter Jake Glover, James Lard came in as a pinch runner and later scored on a double by John Bagwell. Sewanee tacked on three more runs thanks to an RBI fielder's choice by Aidan Petrocco and a two-run single from Blake Pou, cutting the deficit to one. With two on and two out, Covenant escaped the jam with a strikeout to end the game.

Pou led Sewanee at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two doubles two RBIs. Charlie Teel added three hits and two RBIs, while Jennewein reached base four times and scored twice. Petrocco finished with two hits, two runs, and an RBI.

Sewanee used 10 pitchers in the game, with Israel taking the loss. Brady Daniell earned the win in relief for Covenant, and Jonothan Glover recorded the save.

The Tigers outhit the Scots 16-13 but left 12 runners stranded on base and were undone by four defensive errors.

Sewanee returns to action this weekend traveling to Centre for their last away series of the regular season.
