Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Tigers fall to Franklin and Marshall despite Nischwitz’s dominance at the X

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Despite standout performances from Asa Nischwitz and Will Kennedy, the Sewanee men's lacrosse team fell 13-11 to Franklin and Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Harris Stadium.

Nischwitz dominated at the faceoff X, winning 23 of 27 draws and collecting 15 ground balls, fueling Sewanee's offensive efforts with an impressive 85% win rate. Kennedy led the attack with a hat trick, while Robert Freeman and Charles Moran each contributed two goals and an assist. Manoli Loupassi and Henry Westfall added a goal and two assists apiece.

The Tigers struck early, as Sage Cookerly found Kennedy just 43 seconds into the game. The Diplomats responded to tie the score, but Sewanee closed the first quarter with back-to-back goals from Kennedy and Moran to lead 3-1.

Franklin and Marshall cut the deficit to one early in the second, but Freeman's goal off a Westfall assist pushed the lead back to two. The Diplomats countered with four consecutive goals — two on man-up opportunities — to seize a 6-4 advantage. Sewanee answered with a man-up goal of their own, as Kennedy connected with Moran to narrow the gap to 6-5 at halftime.

The third quarter opened with a Nischwitz faceoff win, but Franklin and Marshall capitalized on two quick goals following key saves by goalkeeper Teddy Scarborough. Sewanee clawed back, with Freeman and Devon Root (man-up) finding the net, trimming the deficit to one. After another Diplomat goal, Loupassi assisted Kennedy to keep the Tigers within striking distance. Franklin and Marshall extended their lead to 10-8 with an unassisted goal in the final seconds of the quarter.

Sewanee surged in the fourth, as Freeman set up Westfall for a goal just over a minute in. Loupassi then tied the game at 10 with a wrap-around finish after a shot clock violation gave the Tigers possession. However, the Diplomats responded with a decisive three-goal burst in under four minutes.

Niko Maheras netted an unassisted goal with 54 seconds remaining, but Franklin and Marshall secured the ensuing faceoff to seal the victory.

The Tigers look to bounce back as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face DeSales on Wednesday and Calvin on Friday at The Bolles School.
