Tigers rally to take down DeSales

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Will Kennedy recorded four points as Sewanee's men's lacrosse team rallied past DeSales to kick off their spring break in Jacksonville, Fla., at the Bolles School on Wednesday afternoon.

Sewanee struck first with a quick goal from Devon Root, assisted by Charles Moran. Root added another goal before DeSales got on the board. Hank Walsh extended Sewanee's lead, capitalizing on a faceoff win by Asa Nischwitz.

The Bulldogs responded by silencing the Tigers' offense in the second quarter and into the start of the third, scoring five unanswered goals and limiting Sewanee to just seven shots.

Charles Moran reignited Sewanee's scoring with a rebound goal off a Niko Maheras shot, in the third, ending the Tigers' drought since the first quarter. However, DeSales quickly answered, scoring off the ensuing faceoff and adding another goal for an 8-4 lead with 8:52 remaining.

Moran then connected with Kennedy, sparking Sewanee's comeback with six unanswered goals. After a DeSales timeout, Kennedy found Griffin Peterson for a crucial goal, and Hudson Gregory assisted Manoli Loupassi with just 12 seconds left in the third to cut the deficit to one.

A late penalty on DeSales gave Sewanee a man-up opportunity to start the fourth, and the Tigers capitalized with a goal from Maheras, assisted by Root.

Kennedy set up Loupassi for a wrap-around goal, giving Sewanee the lead with 8:58 to play. The Tigers' defense stepped up, causing two turnovers and preventing DeSales from registering a shot before Kennedy sealed the win with an insurance goal at the 4:33 mark.

Flynn Bowman made a clutch save with 2:50 remaining, and the Bulldogs managed just two off-target shots down the stretch. A caused turnover by Cam Thornton and a ground ball from Carter Cole with 11 seconds left secured the victory.

DeSales committed 21 turnovers to Sewanee's 15. Carter Cole and Gus Albright led the defensive effort with two caused turnovers each, while six other Tigers added one. Brady Cole and Asa Nischwitz picked up four ground balls apiece, while Carter Cole, Root, Kennedy, and Henry Westfall collected three each.

Sewanee will face Calvin University on Friday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT at the Bolles School before starting conference play against Oglethorpe on March 22 in Atlanta, Ga.
