Tigers pick up conference opener against Oglethorpe

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Marlin Price scored five goals, and Ella Townsend added two goals, six ground balls, and three caused turnovers as Sewanee's women's lacrosse team opened conference play with a 13-7 win over Oglethorpe in Atlanta.

The Tigers dominated possession, outshooting the Petrels 39-13 and winning 18 of 23 draw controls. Alex Kelly led the draw with 11 control wins, while Kennedy Harcourt added four and Sally Whitehead contributed two. Winnie Pajcic anchored the defense with six caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Townsend and Claire Dillard each caused three turnovers.

Sewanee struck first as Price scored with 9:50 on the clock, setting the tone early. Kelly added a man-down goal off a Brooke Sigmon assist, and Elizabeth Muller extended the lead to 3-0 just two minutes later. Sigmon connected with Kelly again before Oglethorpe responded with a man-up goal late in the first quarter.

In the second, a key caused turnover by Pajcic and a ground ball pickup by Mallory Magee set up another Sewanee goal, as Morgan Boylan found Townsend for the finish. Oglethorpe quickly responded, but Herrington converted a man-up free position shot to extend the lead. The Petrels closed out the half strong with two unanswered goals, cutting Sewanee's advantage to 6-4 at the break.

Sigmon and Price linked up early in the third, but a turnover led to an Oglethorpe goal on the other end. Herrington tallied her second man-up free position goal, and with 44 seconds left in the quarter, she found Townsend to push the lead back to four.

Oglethorpe opened the fourth with a man-up free position goal, but Sewanee answered immediately as Price netted her fourth goal just 43 seconds later. The Tigers kept their foot on the gas as Erika Bolcar recorded two quick assists—first finding Herrington and then setting up Price for her fifth goal of the day. Oglethorpe tacked on a late free-position goal, but Price sealed the game with her fifth tally in the final seconds for a 13-7 final score.

The Tigers return to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Augustana at Puett Field.
