Four-run sixth carries Tigers to split at Millsaps

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn.Hannah Wilson posted two hits in each game and Sydney Tackett collected two hits and three RBIs in the second contest, helping Sewanee split a doubleheader, with each team winning 7-4, against Millsaps College in softball action Saturday in Jackson, Miss.
 
The two teams play the rubber game of the series Sunday at Noon.
 
In the opener Wilson collected two hits with two RBIs and scored a run but Millsaps scored five total runs in the first two innings en route to a 7-4 victory. The Tigers scored twice in the first inning on an RBI double from Wilson and a run-scoring single by Maggie Barker.
 
The Majors plated two runs in the first and three more in the second to take the lead. Madilyn Parker and Wilson each collected RBI singles in the fifth, pulling Sewanee within, 6-4, before Millsaps added an insurance run in the sixth.
 
Reagen Huskey (3-7) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in six innings. She walked four and struck out five. Millsaps' Allana Vasquez picked up the win, allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts in a complete game.
 
Millsaps plated two runs in the first inning of the second contest before Sewanee answered with single runs in the second (RBI single from Tackett) and third innings (sacrifice fly by Wilson). The Majors added two more runs in the fourth, but Sewanee took the lead for good with four runs in the sixth, including a two-run double by Tackett and a two-run single from Huskey.
 
Ansley Giffin's RBI single in the seventh gave Sewanee an insurance run. Wilson, Barker, Giffin, Tackett and Huskey all registered two hits in the win and Barker scored a pair of runs.
 
Huskey worked the final 3.2 innings in relief for the win, allowing one unearned run on four hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Hanna Hollis started for the Tigers and gave up three runs on three hits with three walks in 3.1 innings.
 
Hailey Peterson took the loss for the Majors, allowing seven runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts.
 
In the opener Abbie Buckner led off the game with a walk, stole second and scored on Wilson's double to leftcenter. Barker followed with a run-scoring single through the left side and Sewanee led 2-0 after a half inning.
 
The Majors answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame after a one-out triple by Peterson and an RBI double from Vasquez. With two outs Alli Nolen doubled to right, plating Vasquez to knot the contest at two.
 
Kadence Cannon and Kinsey Smith both walked to leadoff the bottom of the second for Millsaps and stolen bases put the runners on second and third. A groundout by Ella Morgan Sears scored a run and Peterson followed with a two-run homer to left for a 5-2 advantage for the home team.
 
The Majors added a run in the fourth with a leadoff single by Kinsey Smith and a bunt single by Brynn Arena. A fly ball to right pushed the runners to second and third and pinch-runner Ava Palumbo came across on a bunt from Peterson.
 
The Tigers got two runs back in the fifth when Buckner beat out an infield single and stole second. Parker then singled up the middle, scoring a run. Parker went to second on the throw, third on a wild pitch and came across on a single up the middle from Wilson, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
 
In the sixth Smith drew a leadoff walk and Arena singled to left. Smith moved to third on a fly ball by Sears and scored on a sacrifice fly from Peterson.
 
Millsaps scored twice in the first inning of the second contest after a two-out walk to Vasquez. Kodi Jimmie singled to rightcenter and Nolen's double to right plated both runners.
 
The Tigers got a run back in the second inning when Barker led off with a double to right and moved to third on a groundout by Christian Cain. With two outs Tackett's single to right plated Barker.
 
Sewanee tied the game in the third after a leadoff double from Buckner, who stole third and came across on a sac fly from Wilson.
 
The Majors regained the lead in the fourth inning, starting with a hit by pitch from Hannah Briscoe. She went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cannon and with two outs, Peterson walked. Vasquez then singled to center, plating a run, and an error allowed Peterson to come all the way around to score for a 4-2 Millsaps edge.
 
In the sixth Parker and Wilson both singled to leadoff and with two outs, Giffin singled to left, loading the bases. Tackett followed with a two-run double to center, tying the game at four. Huskey then singled to rightcenter, plating two more runs for a 6-4 Sewanee advantage.
 
The Tigers added to the lead in the seventh with three straight two-out singles from Wilson, Barker and Cain to load the bases. Giffin's RBI single to center made it 7-4 for the visitors.
