Tigers dominate conference opener against Stormy Petrels

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Robert Freeman recorded two goals and three assists as the Sewanee men's lacrosse team dominated its conference opener with a 26-2 victory over Oglethorpe on Saturday in Atlanta.

Jake Greene registered a hat trick and an assist, while seven Tigers scored twice, and nine others added a goal each. In total, 21 Sewanee players contributed either a goal or an assist.

The Tigers controlled possession from the X, with Asa Nischwitz going a perfect 18-for-18, Max Bensing finishing 7-for-7, and Clay Upchurch winning 6-of-7 faceoffs. Nischwitz also led the team with 13 ground balls, followed by Bensing with seven and Upchurch with three.

Defensively, Gus Albright, William Hooker, Shay Dotterer, and Devon Root each forced two turnovers and collected two ground balls. Carter Cole and Charles Moran added four ground balls apiece, while Bowman, Cole, and Charlie Hanson also added a caused turnovers.

Sewanee wasted no time getting on the board, as Nischwitz secured the opening faceoff and Manoli Loupassi scored less than a minute in. A turnover forced by Albright and a ground ball pickup from Corbet Darden set up Charles Moran's goal at the 12:41 mark, sparking an 11-goal run that gave the Tigers a commanding 13-0 lead after the first quarter.

The offensive onslaught continued in the second. Huden Gregory opened the period with a goal off a Freeman assist after another Nischwitz faceoff win. Shortly after, Hank Walsh connected with Griffin Peterson following an Oglethorpe turnover. A ground ball from Colin Bennett ignited a four-goal stretch in just 90 seconds, fueled by three consecutive faceoff wins from Nischwitz and Bensing. Walsh netted an unassisted goal before assisting Gregory, and Bennett followed with back-to-back scores. Greene capped off the half with two straight goals, sending Sewanee into the break with a commanding 22-0 lead.

Greene struck again to open the third, converting a feed from Sage Cookerly. Walton Sullivan's ground ball set up David Powell for an unassisted goal, while Woods McCormick found JM DuPree for another score late in the quarter.

Oglethorpe broke through with two goals in the fourth, but Sewanee answered as Hooker forced a turnover and scooped up a ground ball to set up another Powell goal.

Sewanee returns home for its conference home opener against Southwestern on March 28 at 7 p.m. The Tigers will then wrap up non-conference play against Randolph-Macon on April 1 at 3 p.m. at Harris Stadium.
