Tigers defeat Southwestern at home, 16-11

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Manoli Loupassi recorded five goals and an assist, while Devon Root notched his 100th career point as Sewanee defeated Southwestern, 16-11, in its SAA home opener Friday night at Harris Stadium.

Loupassi led the Tigers with six points, while Root finished with three, tallying two goals and an assist along with six ground balls. Charles Moran also posted three points on a goal and two assists while collecting five ground balls. Brady Cole picked up six ground balls, and Niko Maheras, Will Kennedy, Sage Cookerly, and Henry Westfall each contributed two points. Robert Freeman and Griffin Peterson added a goal apiece.

At the faceoff X, Sewanee won 22-of-31 draws. Asa Nischwitz led the effort, going 19-of-28 with 10 ground balls and a caused turnover. Clay Upchurch was a perfect 2-of-2 with a ground ball, while Max Bensing won his lone attempt and also picked up a ground ball.

Nischwitz won the opening faceoff, leading to Loupassi's first goal of the game and an early Sewanee lead. However, Southwestern responded with two unanswered goals to take a brief advantage. Maheras then sparked a four-goal Sewanee run, assisting Cookerly's score before Moran set up Loupassi's second goal. Peterson capped the surge, giving the Tigers a 5-2 advantage.

The second quarter saw just four goals, with Southwestern netting two early before Root's milestone 100th career point. The Pirates pulled within one with a man-up goal before halftime.

Southwestern carried its momentum into the third, tying the game after Cade McDonald forced a turnover and connected with Jackson Strauser. Sewanee responded with another dominant stretch, as Moran set up Kennedy to ignite a five-goal run. Just 30 seconds later, Westfall found the net after a Nischwitz faceoff win. Loupassi then rattled off three straight goals in just 1:10, with Root assisting on the first, forcing a Southwestern timeout. The Pirates managed a last-second man-up goal to close the period.

Sewanee opened the fourth with two quick goals—Loupassi assisting Westfall before Kennedy set up Freeman. Southwestern answered with three goals in just over a minute, but Cookerly broke the run with under seven minutes to play. The Pirates added one more before Moran assisted Root for the final goal, sealing the Tigers' 16-11 victory.

Sewanee will conclude its non-conference schedule on Tuesday, April 1, hosting Randolph-Macon at 3 p.m. CT.
