Tigers drop Saturday doubleheader to Rhodes

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Zach Fortman posted three hits, five RBIs, and a run in game two, while Charlie Teel added four runs and four hits on the day, but Sewanee dropped its home conference doubleheader against Rhodes on Saturday.

Charlie Teel and Tyler Pinson each notched two hits and a run, but the Tigers stranded eight runners in a narrow 3-2 loss.

Blake Pou's two-out single in the second put pressure on the Lynx, and two walks loaded the bases for Sebastian Leinberger. With a full count, Rhodes' Zac Sohosky delivered a crucial strikeout to escape unscathed.

Rhodes broke through in the third with back-to-back RBI doubles for a 2-0 lead. The Lynx added another run in the eighth after a walk and a double set up an RBI groundout.

Sewanee rallied in the bottom of the eighth, sparked by back-to-back hits from Teel and Pinson. Two fielding errors loaded the bases with no outs before Pou's fielder's choice plated Teel. Pinson later scored on a double steal attempt, bringing the Tigers within one.

Henry Collins pitched a clean ninth to keep Sewanee in striking distance. Will Jennewein led off the bottom half with a single, but Rhodes turned a game-ending double play to seal the win.

Matt Munn delivered a strong outing, tossing seven innings with six strikeouts. Collins allowed one hit in two innings of relief, striking out two.

Rhodes struck first in the second inning with an RBI single, but Sewanee answered in the third. Teel's one-out double set up Fortman's RBI single, tying the game at 1-1.

The Lynx pulled away with three runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings, building a 10-3 lead.

Sewanee responded in the seventh. With the bases loaded and no outs, Fortman ripped a two-RBI triple down the left-field line, though Pou was thrown out at home. Will Moore struck out, but Fortman later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to four. Jennewein reached on a bunt single and advanced on a throwing error, but a flyout ended the rally.

Fortman drove in five of Sewanee's six runs, scoring the other. Teel added two hits and three runs, while Pou contributed a hit and a run.

The Tigers play the last game of the series tomorrow at Noon.
