Tigers split midweek doubleheader versus Maryville

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Christian Cain collected four hits and three doubles, while Grace Black tallied four hits, three runs, and three RBIs with a home run. Sophie Nolan also homered as the Sewanee softball team split its midweek doubleheader against Maryville on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.

Cain led the Tigers in the opener with three doubles, three hits, two runs, and an RBI, while Black added three hits and three RBIs. However, a four-run seventh inning lifted the Scots to a 10-6 victory.
Maryville took an early lead with a two-run homer in the first and added another run in the second. Sewanee responded with four unanswered runs, taking the lead in the fourth after Black's solo home run in the third and a clutch two-RBI single to right center in the fourth.

Cain sparked the fourth-inning rally with a leadoff double before advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kaylie Smith. Abbie Bucker was hit by a pitch, putting runners on the corners, and a stolen base moved Bucker to second. Black then delivered a two-run single to give Sewanee a 4-3 lead.

The Scots regained the lead in the sixth with a two-out, two-RBI triple, and a run-scoring single to make it 6-4. Sewanee fought back in the bottom half as Cain led off with another double and Nolan, in a pinch-hit appearance, singled to put runners on the corners. Madilyn Parker re-entered and stole second, setting up Smith's RBI groundout and Bucker's game-tying RBI.

Maryville, however, responded with a decisive four-run seventh inning, capitalizing on four hits to take a 10-6 lead. The Tigers were unable to answer in the bottom of the frame as Jacey Goetzinger retired the side to secure the win for the Scots.

Sewanee bounced back in the second game with a strong offensive performance, including a five-run first inning and a late surge to claim an 11-9 victory.

Maryville struck first again, scoring twice in the opening frame, but the Tigers quickly responded. Wilson tied the game with a two-RBI single down the right-field line, and Nolan followed with an RBI single to bring Wilson home. Cain later scored on a Sydney Tackett groundout, and Parker capped the explosive inning with an RBI single up the middle to give Sewanee a 5-2 advantage.

Maryville trimmed the deficit with a run in the second and threatened with the bases loaded, but Parker made a diving catch in center field to escape the jam. The Scots continued to chip away, adding a pair of runs in the third before taking an 8-6 lead in the fourth with a three-run inning.

The Tigers answered in the fifth. Nolan launched her first collegiate home run to left field to pull Sewanee within one. Tackett and Parker followed with back-to-back singles, and Smith's RBI single tied the game. Bucker then laid down a bunt to bring home the go-ahead run, and a dropped pop-up by Maryville allowed two more runs to score, giving Sewanee an 11-8 cushion.

Maryville plated one more in the seventh, but Bucker stranded two on base to secure the win.

Bucker earned the victory in relief, pitching four innings while allowing four runs on seven hits. Hanna Hollis started for Sewanee, throwing three innings.

The Tigers head to Millsaps to open conference this weekend, for a Saturday doubleheader and a Sunday Noon start, before returning home to face Rhodes on April 5 for a doubleheader.
