SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Hannah Wilson recorded two hits in both games,
Christian Cain drove in two runs in the opener and
Kaylie Smith collected two hits and drove in a run in the second contest for Sewanee in 10-6 and 5-3 losses Friday in the Ulili Softball Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Tigers trailed 6-0 and 8-1 against SUNY Oneonta before scoring five times in the final two innings.
Abbie Buckner and Wilson registered two hits apiece and Cain tripled home a pair of runs while
Sydney Tackett and
Ansley Giffin each scored twice.
Hanna Hollis suffered the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits in 1.2 innings. Buckner tossed the final 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
In the second game
Grace Black plated a run with a bunt single in the first inning and Smith plated a run with a single and Cain scored later in the second inning, giving Sewanee a 3-1 edge versus the University of Puget Sound. It stayed that way until the Loggers plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Reagen Huskey gave up five runs on eight hits with eight walks and one strikeout in six innings for the Tigers, taking the loss.
Buckner singled to leadoff the contest against Puget Sound and went to third when the ball was booted in the outfield. Black's bunt single put Sewanee in front, 1-0, after a half inning.
The Loggers tied the game in the bottom of the inning after a one-out doubles by Claire Besancon and Alyssa Figueroa.
In the second inning Giffin singled with one out and
Madilyn Parker walked, with both runners moving up on a passed ball. With two outs Smith singled to center, pushing across a run, and Cain came around after an errant throw, giving the Tigers a 3-1 advantage.
Huskey worked around a single and two walks in the second inning, with Besancon lining into a doubleplay to end the threat. Shew retired the side in the third, gave up a walk in the fourth and a walk and a single in the fifth.
Sewanee stranded a pair of runners in the fifth inning as well after a walk to Black and a single by Wilson.
Puget Sound posted four runs on four hits in the sixth, starting with a one-out single by Jazzy Allen and a walk to Elyssa Garcia. Mikayla Johnson's single loaded the bases and two runs came in on a single to center by Dail.
Besancon's single loaded the bases again and Figueroa walked, forcing in a run. Liberty Shake also drew a free pass with two outs, plating the final run.
Sewanee loaded the bases in the first inning in the opener versus SUNY Oneonta thanks to a singles from Buckner and Wilson and a hit by pitch by Tackett, but Giffin flied out to end the inning.
Julia Serena singled to leadoff for the Red Dragons in the bottom of the inning and went to second on Jaime Cardello. With two outs Emily Brown and Sophia Mangone posted back-to-back RBI doubles for a 2-0 SUNY edge.
In the second inning Abigail Silliman and Kayla Kean both singled and moved to second and third on a sac bunt by Maya Nelsen. Cailin Hall singled home a run and Serena's sacrifice fly plated another before an RBI single from Cardello made it 5-0.
Mangone struck out but reached on a passed ball with one out and Silliman reached on an error. Two wild pitches allowed Mangone to score, extending the Red Dragons lead to 6-0.
Tackett drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and Giffin reached on an error, with both runners moving up on a wild pitch. Huskey's grounded to second plated a run for the Tigers.
Sophia Camacho reached on an error to start the bottom of the inning for SUNY and Cardello singled with one out and stole second. Emily Brown's RBI single scored Camacho and another run came across on the second error of the inning for an 8-1 Red Dragons advantage.
Tackett reached on an error to leadoff the Sewanee sixth and Giffin followed with an RBI triple. She came across on
Sophie Nolen's groundout, cutting the deficit to 8-3.
Ava Thys singled and Brown doubled in the SUNY bottom of the sixth. Thys scored on the double and Brown went to third on a throwing error and scored on Riley McDonnell's groundout.
Wilson led off the seventh with a single and
Maggie Barker drove her in with a double. With two outs Giffin walked and Cain's triple plated two runs before Nolen popped out to end the game.
Sewanee returns home this Wednesday for a doubleheader against Maryville College at 2 p.m.
