Men's Lacrosse pushs past Calvin, 15-12

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Griffin Peterson tallied a career-high three assists as Sewanee defeated Calvin on Friday afternoon in Jacksonville, Fla.

Manoli Loupassi led Sewanee with five goals and an assist while Will Kennedy matched him five goals. Charles Moran contributed a goal and three assists, adding two ground balls, and Peterson added two ground balls to his afternoon. Brady Cole secured a career-high seven ground balls.

James Bogusky anchored the defense with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Carter Cole added two caused turnovers. Sewanee's defense stood strong, allowing just 15 shots through the first three quarters.

At the faceoff X, Max Bensing was perfect, going 4-for-4 with two ground balls, and Asa Nischwitz was 12-of-24, collecting six ground balls.

Calvin opened the scoring with two quick goals, but Loupassi put Sewanee on the board with 5:39 left in the first. The Knights responded with a third goal off a Sewanee turnover, regaining a two-goal lead. Loupassi struck again with 16 seconds left in the quarter, closing the gap after a key save from Flynn Bowman.

In the second quarter, Sewanee's defense shut out Calvin, allowing just three shots while the offense added three goals. Robert Freeman tied the game off a Peterson assist, Loupassi connected with Kennedy to take the lead, and Peterson found Kennedy again to make it 5-3.

The Tigers surged in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals in just over six minutes. Gus Albright connected with Loupassi to start the run, followed by rapid goals from Kennedy and Moran after consecutive faceoff wins by Nischwitz and Bensing. Carlton Ward then assisted Hudson Jones for Sewanee's 10th goal. Calvin managed two goals, one on a man-up opportunity, but Sewanee closed the quarter with two more goals — Loupassi's fourth and another Moran-to-Kennedy connection.

Loupassi extended the lead to 13-5 early in the fourth, but Calvin mounted a late comeback with five straight goals. Devon Root halted the run with a man-up goal, and after a crucial save by Jaser Amer, Sage Cookerly sealed the win with a late score. Calvin added a last-second goal, but the Tigers held on for the victory.

Sewanee opens conference play against Oglethorpe on March 22 in Atlanta, Ga., before hosting Southwestern on March 28 at Harris Stadium.
