SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tyler Pinson posted two hits and
Matt Munn worked into the seventh after a rough two innings in Sewanee's 10-2 loss to top-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in baseball action Thursday in Pensacola, Fla.
Playing their third game in less than 24 hours, the Tigers (11-7) trailed 5-1 into the seventh after the Warhawks plated five runs in the first two innings. Sewanee played one run in the sixth before UWW added five more runs in the seventh to break open the contest.
Munn (2-1) gave up six runs on eight hits in six-plus innings with two walks and four strikeouts. The righthander settled down after the rough start, getting into the seventh before the exiting after an infield single and a hit by pitch.
Cade Hansen (2-0) tossed six innings for the win, giving up one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out eight, retiring the side in three of the six innings of work. Sewanee managed only three baserunners in the first five innings before breaking through for a run in the sixth.
The Warhawks started quickly with a pair of runs in the first after a two-out ground-rule double to left by Eli Frank. Danny Hopper walked and Adam Cootway followed with an RBI single through the right side. Hopper scored from first when the throw got away.
In the second inning Sam Paden and Darryl Jackson doubled home a run. Dominik McVay beat out a bunt single, putting runners on the corners, and Jackson scored on a bad pickoff throw to first. Aaron Holland's sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third and Frank's two-out single to rightcenter gave the Warhawks a 5-0 advantage.
The Tigers had just three baserunners through the first five innings before
Zach Fortman singled to leadoff the single and
Aidan Petrocco followed with a single. Fortman went to third on a wild pitch and Pinson's single to center plated a run.
Wisconsin-Whitewater broke the game open in the seventh, starting with an infield single by Jackson and Cade Honkamp was hit, ending the day for Munn. Jackson was thrown out trying to steal third but Holland walked and Matt Scolan followed with a two-run triple to right.
Scolan came across on a balk before Hopper singled and Cootway belted a two-run homer to leftcenter, extending the lead to 10-1.
In the ninth
Landis Fluck walked and
Jude Wascom singled through the left side. With one out
Oliver Snell singled up the middle, driving home Fluck, but
Harrison Fitzgibbon grounded into a doubleplay to end the game.
Sewanee plays two more games this week – Friday at 7 p.m. versus LeTourneau University and Saturday at 7 p.m. against Carroll University.
