SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Sydney Tackett,
Ansley Giffin and
Kaylie Smith each posted two hits in the opener and
Maggie Barker collected a pair in the second contest, but Drew University used big innings in both contests, sweeping Sewanee, 7-6 and 5-1, in the Ulili Softball Invitational on Tuesday in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Tigers (5-7) play a pair of games on Wednesday starting at 3 p.m. CT, facing SUNY Oneonta and Emory University.
The Rangers plated four runs in the first inning and single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh in the opener, with Olivia Maglicano's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh driving home the winning run. That erased the comeback by Sewanee, with Tackett driving in
Madilyn Parker with the tying run in the top of the inning.
Reagen Huskey's RBI groundout in the second and an RBI triple from
Ansley Giffin in the third got the Tigers on the board. Sewanee plated three runs in the fourth to take a brief advantage, including an RBI double by Smith, a run-scoring double from
Abbie Buckner and a fielder's choice that scored a run by Parker.
Drew tied the contest in the fifth on a double steal and MacKenzie Pisani's run-scoring single put the Rangers ahead, 6-5, though Tackett threw out Haley Meierhofer at the plate on the play to keep the deficit at one.
In the seventh Parker led off with a triple and two batters later, Tackett singled to right, pushing across the tying run.
Drew answered in the bottom of the inning after a walk to Josie DiTroia and a one-out single by Aurora Marino. With two outs Maglicano singled through the left side, plating Ashlyn Cassetty with the winning run.
Huskey suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits. She walked seven and struck out five. Gabby Duran, the second Drew hurler, picked up the win with 3.2 innings of relief, giving up one run on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Drew scored once in the first and three times in the second inning to take a commanding lead in the second game. Sewanee posted eight hits but stranded nine runners in the loss.
Hanna Hollis took the loss for the Tigers, allowing four runs on nine hits in four innings. Buckner worked the final three frames for Sewanee.
Teagan Bradley picked up the win for Drew with five shutout innings with three strikeouts and Duran got the final six outs.
Sewanee's only run of the game came in the seventh inning after two-out singles from Smith, Buckner and Parker, the last one scoring Smith. Barker also followed with a single to load the bases before Giffin's fly ball ended the game.
