Leonard ties for second in high jump on first day of SAA Championships

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Junior Sam Leonard tied for second in the high jump and junior Lukus White set a school-record in the weight throw for Sewanee on Friday at the Southern Athletic Association Indoor Track & Field Championships in Danville, Ky.
 
The conference meet continues Saturday with field events in the men's and women's triple jump, shot put and pole vault and running event finals in the mile run, 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter dash, 400-meters, 800-meters, 200-meters, 3000-meters and 4x400-meter relay.
 
Leonard cleared 6-feet, 3.5-inches, tying Centre's Isaac Johnson for second place, good for seven points for the Tigers in the team standings.
 
White set a school-record in the weight throw with a mark of 39-feet, 2-inches, finishing 10th in the event. Sophomore Stevie Mack, junior Brayden Owens, junior Gavin Potter and sophomore Atticus Kowalski placed 11th-14th in the event with marks of 37-11, 37-10, 37-9 and 32-2, respectively.
 
Senior Kamilla Haidaienko was 10th in the weight throw with a mark of 36-5.
 
In running prelims, sophomore Jimmy Holmes got the final qualifying spot in the 400-meters in 52.52 while junior Lane Gamble (52.86) and sophomore Jackson Knoll (53.71) did not reach the finals.
 
In the women's 60-meter dash, freshmen Journey Morrison (8.18) and Arianna Shirak (8.43) did not qualify for the finals while freshman Jacob Heilpern (7.36), senior Jenkins Darbney (7.62) and junior Nana Addo (7.65) all failed to make the finals for the men in the same event.
 
Morrison posted the third-best time in the 60-meter hurdles qualifying at 9.44 but senior Jocelyn Covaney (10.33) and junior Erin Graffeo (11.19) did not make the finals. In the 200 Shirak (28.16) for the women and Heilpern (24.00) and Holmes (23.77) for the men did not reach the finals.
 
The women's distance medley relay of freshman Livi Burns, Covaney, sophomore Page Wells and freshman Elizabeth Cook placed fifth in 14:29.23 while the men's DMR of freshman Chase Cavitch, junior Brandon Christ, Darbney and freshman Declan Oberlies was also fifth in 11:31.53.
