SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Matt Munn tossed seven shutout innings,
Sebastian Leinberger scored a pair of runs and
Charlie Teel drove in a run in Sewanee's 3-0 victory over DePauw University in baseball action here Friday at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers remained undefeated with the win in the first of four games against DePauw behind strong pitching from Munn and
Henry Collins, who worked two innings for the save. Leinberger scored twice on wild pitches and Teel drove in the final run with a single in the fifth.
Munn (2-0) extended his scoreless inning streak to 17.2 dating to the first inning of the season-opener against Capital University. The righthander gave up four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out six.
He allowed a pair of singles in the second inning and a single to leadoff the third before retiring eight straight hitters. He induced an inning-ending doubleplay after a leadoff single in the sixth as well and worked around an error in the seventh.
Collins gave up leadoff singles in the eighth and ninth but Tyler Walkey grounded into a doubleplay to end the eighth and Grady Johnson lined into a twin-killing to end the contest.
Pearse Riendeau (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on two hits in five innings of work. The lefthander walked four, struck out five and tossed three wild pitches, two of which scored runs for the Tigers.
Finn O'Meara tossed the final three innings for DePauw, walking one and striking out five.
The Tigers plated a run in the first inning without the aid of a hit, as Leinberger was hit to start the frame and
Blake Pou drew a walk. Teel moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt and Leinberger came across on a wild pitch. Riendeau got out of the inning with a popout and a strikeout.
Nathaniel Hulen singled with two outs in the second for DePauw and moved to third on a single to leftcenter by Bryson Dorsey. Munn fell behind 3-0, battled back to 3-2 and Leinberger made a nice sliding stop in short rightfield on a grounder by Drew Straub to end the threat.
In the third Leinberger singled to center with one out, Pou was hit and Teel walked, loading the bases.
Owen Andress struck out but Riendeau uncorked another wild pitch, allowing Leinberger to score for a 2-0 Tigers edge.
Pinch-hitter
Jonah Patton walked in the fifth for Sewanee, went to second on a groundout by Pou and scored on a single to center from Teel, extending the lead to 3-0.
Munn worked out of a jam in the seventh after Johnson reached on an error to leadoff, a grounder off the glove of
Wilson Irvin that rolled down the rightfield line, allowing Johnson to take second on the play. Carter Knoll grounded to second, pushing Johnson to third, but Louis Florida struck out and Hulen grounded to first, keeping the score, 3-0.
