Baseball drops doubleheader to DePauw

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Will Jennewin posted two hits, two RBIs, and one run, while Ethan Williams added two hits and two RBIs, but Sewanee left 17 on base in Saturday's doubleheader against DePauw at Montgomery Field in baseball action on Saturday, 4-2, 13-9.

Sewanee (8-2) stranded six in the first game (seven innings) and 11 in the second contest. DePauw walked nine in the second, but a four-run 10th inning broke a tie game.

Williams was 2-for-4 adding two walks and a stolen base, while Alden Wright went 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs, delivering a clutch single and sacrifice fly in game two.

DePauw got an early lead in the first game with a two-out, two-run home run. The visitors added another run in the top of the fourth after a fielding error from Sewanee and tacked on another in the top of the seventh for a 4-0 lead.

Sewanee sparked their offense in the bottom of the seventh as Charlie Teel and Blake Pou singled to right field, putting two on with no outs. However, DePauw's Nate Tencza struck out Luke Thomson and induced a flyout from Tyler Pinson. Jake Glover was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Bill Gantt delivered a pinch-hit single to center field, scoring Teel and Pou. Yet, Sewanee stranded two runners as Ethan Williams' flyout to right field ended the game.

In game two, DePauw again took an early lead with a two-out single to right field, bringing home two runs. Sewanee had an opportunity in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with three walks, but after scoring one run on a walk, DePauw's Charlie Hawk struck out two straight batters to escape the jam.

DePauw added another two-run homer in the fourth, followed by two more runs from a double to left center and a single through the right side.

Sewanee's offense ignited in the fifth. Pou singled to right center, and after Hawk issued two walks, the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs. Jennewein hit an RBI single through the left side, Pinson reached on a fielder's choice to score Teel, and Wright delivered a pinch-hit, two-RBI single up the middle, narrowing the deficit to one run. After a pitching change, DePauw induced a popout to end the inning.

Holden Phillips recorded a three-up, three-down inning, keeping Sewanee's momentum going. In the bottom of the sixth, Pou was hit by a pitch, and a fielding error advanced Pou and Teel to scoring position. Williams capitalized with a two-RBI single to left field, giving Sewanee the lead.

DePauw responded in the eighth with a two-out, two-RBI single to retake the lead. Sewanee answered in the bottom frame, as Pinson ripped a triple down the right-field line, scoring Jennewein. Wright followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers the lead again.

In the ninth, DePauw tied the game with an RBI single, and Sewanee couldn't generate offense, sending the contest into extras. In the 10th, DePauw scored on a sacrifice fly, then added three insurance runs. Giacomo Quinn closed the game with a clean bottom frame, securing DePauw's 13-9 victory.

The teams will face off in the series finale at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Montgomery Field.
