Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Big second quarter sends men’s lacrosse past Piedmont

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sage Cookerly scored four goals as Sewanee used a big second quarter to defeat Piedmont on the road in men's lacrosse action on Thursday night in Demorest, Ga., 17-10.

Will Kennedy opened up scoring for the Tigers after Griffin Peterson picked up the ground ball off of a Piedmont save.

The Cole twins combined for Sewanee's second goal of the game, as Brady Cole found Carter Cole, putting the Tigers up by two early.

Piedmont answered as they won the resulting faceoff from the Sewanee goal, and found the back of the net after an initial save from Flynn Bowman

Robert Freeman gave the Tigers another two-goal lead after finding the back of the net from Henry Westfall. However, another Piedmont faceoff win gave the Lions possession which they capitalized on for a 3-2 game. The Lions found the back of the net again with 2:09 remaining in the first for a tie game.

Niko Maheras capitalized from far back with 26 seconds remaining, but Piedmont secured a last-second goal to tie the game at the end of the first quarter.

Sewanee started the second quarter with a faceoff win and Sage Cookerly gave Sewanee the lead again with a quick goal 23 seconds in.

Piedmont again tied the game with 10:57 left to play in the second. Both teams cooled off with neither able to find the back of the net until Hank Walsh broke through with 5:33 on the clock for the Tigers.

Walsh's goal ignited Sewanee's offense as the Tigers collected four more goals to end the half, coming from Cookerly, Manoli Loupassi, Westfall, and again from Loupassi, sending Sewanee into the half, up 10-5.

Westfall collected his second goal of the game just over a minute into the third. Piedmont came up with an answer, as Isaac Harrington's shot ricocheted off the crossbar and into the net.

Peterson found Freeman open in front of the net who made a low angle shot under the goalie for a 12-6 game.

With just seven seconds left in the third, a caused turnover by Charles Moran led to another Sewanee goal, as Loupassi connected with Cookerly.

Piedmont opened the fourth with two unanswered goals, but the Tigers answered with three of their own. Cookery posted the first off a faceoff win from Nischwitz and JM Dupree connected with Woods McCormick just over a minute later for a 16-8 lead. Peterson tallied Sewanee's last goal of the game with 3:32 to play.

The Lions tallied two goals with under a minute left in the game, but the Tigers' lead was too much for a 17-10 Sewanee win.

Kennedy led the Tigers with a balanced attack on both offense and defense as he opened the scoring for the Tigers, caused two turnovers, and picked up two ground balls. Moran led the Tigers with three caused turnovers and one ground ball and Brady Cole caused two turnovers with an assist.

Nischwitz was 14-of-25 from the X and picked up eight ground balls. Gus Albright and Flynn Bowman also collected four ground balls each and Cam Thornton added three. Bowman added 10 saves to his night.

Sewanee outshot Piedmont 66 to 34 and was perfect on their clear attempts for the day, completing 22 of 22.

Sewanee returns home on March 8 to host Franklin and Marshall before heading to Jacksonville, Fla. for spring break where they face DeSales and Calvin University at the Boles School on March 12 and 14.
