SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Will Jennewein posted two hits and two RBIs and
Wilson Irvin belted a two-run homer, backing up five strong innings from
Jake Nevle in a 7-2 Sewanee victory over Otterbein in baseball action here Sunday at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers swept the three-game series and upped their record to 7-0 this season.
Jennewein scored on a
Tyler Pinson single in the second inning to put Sewanee on the board and his two-run single in the fifth capped a three-run inning. After the Cardinals cut the Sewanee lead to 5-2 with two runs in the sixth, Irvin hit a towering two-run shot in the bottom of the inning, stretching the lead to 7-2.
Nevle pitched five shutout frames, working around a pair of errors and giving up just four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth against the righthander and scored a pair of runs on sacrifice flies, but that was all for the visitors.
Relievers
Holden Phillips and
Austin Graber tossed two shutout innings apiece, combing to give up three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. The Cardinals loaded the bases in the ninth against Graber via a single, an error and a walk, but the righthander induced a ground ball to end the contest.
Otterbein starter Bryson Bell (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on four hits in four innings. The Tigers touched reliever Maverick Rabe for five runs on five hits in two innings of work.
Owen Andress drew a leadoff walk in the second inning and Jennewein beat out a bunt single, but Andress was picked off at second. Jennewein stole second and scored on a grounder through the left side by Pinson for a 1-0 Tigers lead.
Luke Short walked to start the third inning and moved to second on
Sebastian Leinberger's sacrifice bunt.
Blake Pou then lined a double down the rightfield line, a controversial call that saw Otterbein head coach George Powell thrown out for arguing with the umpire. Short scored on the play, giving Sewanee a 2-0 advantage.
Jennewein drew a leadoff walk in the fourth and
John Bagwell singled to left, but Pinson was unable to get a bunt down and grounded into a fielder's choice, putting runners on the corners. Irvin smashed a ball for the second straight at-bat but right to the shortstop, which turned into an inning-ending doubleplay.
The Cardinals threatened in the fifth after Calvin Mabry reached on a throwing error and went to second on the play. He moved to third on a line drive to right by Daniel Uhl before Max McCann grounded out to end the inning.
Sewanee added to its lead in the bottom of the inning after a one-out walk by Leinberger. With two outs
Charlie Teel singled to left and Andress beat out a chopper down the third base line, loading the bases. Leinberger scored on a wild pitch and Jennewein followed with a two-run single to leftcenter for a 5-0 Tigers advantage.
Otterbein got two runs back in the sixth, loading the bases against Nevle with singles from Jamie Perebzak and Logan Ullom and a walk by JT Gels. Zac Taylor drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center and pinch-hitter Jake Brown also plated a run with a sac fly, cutting the Sewanee lead to 5-2.
The Tigers got the runs back in the bottom of the inning with a single by Pinson. Irvin's towering homer to leftcenter put the home team back ahead, 7-2.
In the ninth Max McCann singled with two outs and Perebzak reached on a throwing error before a walk to Ullom. Gels grounded out to second to end the contest.
Sewanee hosts DePauw University for a four-game series next weekend beginning Friday with a single game at 2 p.m.
