SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Blake Pou homered three times and drove in eight runs,
Luke Short posted a pair of homers with four RBIs and
Will Jennewein collected four hits, three RBIs and four runs scored in Sewanee's 24-14 win over Capital University on a windy Saturday at Montgomery, completing a three-game for the Tigers.
Sewanee (3-0) plated four runs in the second, two in the third, sixth in the fourth and 10 more in the fifth, including two home runs for Poe in the fifth inning. He then belted a two-run homer in the seventh to end the game early. The wind was blowing straight out (maybe a bit toward rightfield) at 20-30 miles-per-hour the entire game.
Pou finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored to go with the eight RBIs while Will Irvin scored three runs and drove in three,
Owen Andress registered two hits and two runs scored and
Sebastian Leinberger added two hits and four runs scored.
Jake Nevle pitched well for two innings before running into trouble in a seven-run third inning for the Comets (0-3), giving up a two-run homer and a two-run double.
Reliever
Ben Weiser (1-0) was greeted with a two-run home run as well but got the final two outs of that inning before retiring 6-of-7 batters in the fourth and fifth. He sat through the 10-run bottom of the fifth and ran into trouble in the sixth, giving up five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in three-plus innings of work.
Brian Young (0-1), the second of five Capital hurlers, suffered the loss, allowing five runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. Kielan LaMarr paced the Comets with three hits, three RBIs and four runs scored while Ryne McKinney posted three hits with two homers and five RBIs.
LaMarr belted a solo homer to dead centerfield with one out in the first inning for the Comets.
Irvin reached on a throwing error to start the second inning and Jennewein drew a walk.
John Bagwell's slow grounder moved the runners and Short followed with a three-run homer to right. The Tigers weren't done, though, with Leinberger taking a walk before an RBI double down the rightfield line from Pou provided a 4-0 lead.
In the third Capital exploded for eight runs, with Michael Andrysczyk singling to leadoff the inning and stealing second. Charlie Colson reached on a beautiful bunt down the third base line and also stole second. LaMarr then singled softly to short center, plating a run, and two batters later, Hunter Wilson lined a two-run double down the rightfield line.
McKinney then hit a two-run homer and Robby Harrison walked, chasing Nevle from the game. Bryce Kyees greeted reliever Weiser with a two-run homer to right as well, extending the Comets lead to 8-4.
Sewanee got two runs back in the bottom of the frame after a
Tyler Pinson infield single. Jennewein followed with a two-run homer to center, cutting the deficit to 8-6.
Short led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer and Leinberger and Andress both walked. Leinberger came across on a balk and Pinson was hit before Irvin belted a three-run homer to right. Jennewein then doubled and Bagwell followed with an RBI triple to rightcenter, giving the Tigers a 12-8 advantage.
Sewanee recorded 10 more runs in the fifth, starting with a double to right by Leinberger before Pou hit a two-run homer to rightcenter. Andress doubled to deep rightfield and
Ethan Williams singled to center, plating a run.
Alden Wright singled to center and Irvin walked, loading the bases.
Jennewein beat out an infield single to short, scoring a run, and Bagwell drove in two runs with a single to center. Leinberger plated a run with a single to center and Pou followed with his second homer of the inning, a three-run shot, for a 22-8 lead for the Tigers.
Andrysczyk, Colson and LaMarr all singled to leadoff the sixth for Capital, with LaMarr driving in a run. Colson came across on a passed ball and LaMarr scored on a wild pitch. Wilson walked and McKinney homered to right, his second of the day.
Tristan Burns also drew a free pass and Bryce Kyees doubled down the rightfield line before Andrysczyk walked, loading the bases.
Israel Rosseter entered and threw a wild pitch, but the ball bounced back to the catcher, who tossed it to Rosseter and he tagged Burns out to end the inning.
In the seventh LaMarr walked with one out, went to second on a wild pitch, third on a long fly ball by Wilson and scored on a single from McKinney, cutting the Sewanee advantage to 22-14.
Sewanee ended the game in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff double by
Jonah Patton. Pou then drilled a two-run homer to right, completing the career day.
The Tigers host Brandeis University on Monday and Wednesday this week at 2 p.m. at Montgomery Field.
