SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey netted 20 points and
Cydney Wright added 19, but Sewanee shot just 32 percent from the field overall and 0-of-15 from 3-point range, dropping a 72-60 decision at Rhodes College on Friday night.
The Tigers (11-13, 4-7 SAA) end the regular season with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday at Hendrix College.
Sewanee got off to a rough start offensively, connecting on 3-of-14 field goals in the first quarter and 8-for-34 in the first half. The Lynx posted a 12-2 spurt in the first period and led 22-11 after 10 minutes.
Wright scored the first five points of the second quarter and the Tigers pulled within eight on three occasions before Rhodes (6-17, 4-7) netted the nine of the final 11 points of the half for a 37-22 advantage at the break.
Sewanee trailed by nine at the end of three periods but the Lynx posted an 11-2 spurt to begin the final 10 minutes, putting the game away.
Hannah Cleveland recorded 15 points for the Tigers in the loss.
Avery Marsh led the Lynx with 21 points and eight rebounds, one of four Rhodes players in double figures, while AC Milam collected 17 points and eight boards off the bench. Audrey Griffith finished with 11 points and A'niya Lagarde added 10. The Lynx connected on 19-of-22 at the foul line and outscored Sewanee, 35-0, in bench points.
Falvey netted the team's first four points of the game and Wright added an old-fashioned 3-point play to pull the Tigers within, 8-7, midway through the opening period. Milan collected two baskets and Marsh posted another before a putback by Griffith and a 3-pointer from Marsh pushed the Rhodes lead to 20-10. Wright's field goal at the 4:30 mark on the 3-point play was the last made basket of the quarter for the Tigers.
Wright scored the first five points of the second period and Falvey registered a pair of baskets, the second one making it 28-20 with 4:13 remaining in the half. The Tigers were 1-for-5 from the field during a 9-2 stretch for the Lynx over the next four minutes.
Cleveland registered back-to-back baskets in the third quarter and field goals by Falvey and Wright pulled Sewanee within, 43-34, with 2:15 left in the period. The same two Tigers scored late in the quarter and the deficit was still nine headed to the final 10 minutes.
Sewanee made just 1-of-8 shots in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter during the decisive 11-2 run that essentially ended the game.
