SEWANEE, Tenn. – Freshman
Zoe Sedo netted a season-best 18 points with five 3-pointers but Hendrix grabbed 20 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points in a 68-53 victory over Sewanee in the regular season finale for both teams in women's basketball action Sunday in Conway, Ark.
The Tigers (11-14, 4-8 SAA) shot just 32 percent from the field and committed 24 turnovers in the loss as well, the team's third consecutive defeat after winning 4-of-6 midway through conference play.
Sewanee trailed 32-27 at the half and pulled within 34-31 three minutes into the third quarter after a
Hannah Cleveland layup. The Warriors (9-16, 2-10) scored six quick points, forcing a timeout by the Tigers, but Hendrix was not done, extending the run to 16-6 to end the period.
Riley Brady netted the first four points and Ava Knoedl posted a layup and a 3-pointer during the stretch. Sewanee made only 2-of-9 shots and registered five turnovers over the final seven minutes of the quarter, with Sedo making a 3-pointer and Cleveland adding a field goal before one free throw by
Cydney Wright in the final minute.
Sedo hit back-to-back triples in the fourth period, pulling the Tigers within 54-44 with 5:52 to play, and added a layup to cut the deficit to eight. Brailey Forst netted a basket and Knoedl connected on two foul shots for the Warriors.
Olivia Falvey made a 3-pointer to get within nine, but Natalie Edmonson drilled a three for Hendrix after the home team got two offensive rebounds with 1:58 remaining, stretching the lead back to 13.
Falvey was the only other Sewanee player in double figures with 15 points. Falvey and Sedo connected on 11-of-26 shots in the game, 7-for-16 from behind the arc, while the rest of the club made just 7-of-30.
Knoedl finished with 22 points, Brady added 21 and the Warriors shot 35 free throws in the game, with two Sewanee players fouling out and two more ending the contest with four fouls.
Falvey posted the first five points of the game for the Tigers, including a 3-pointer, and one free throw from Sedo and Wright tied the contest at seven with three minutes left in the opening period.
After a jumper from Knoedl, Sewanee posted a 9-2 run that started with another three from Falvey and included a pair of triples by Sedo. Knoedl netted a 3-pointer at the buzzer for Hendrix, cutting the Tiger lead to 17-16.
Sewanee scored just two points in the first five minutes of the second quarter, making 1-of-6 field goals with five turnovers. Brady and Knoedl each made four free throws for a 25-19 Hendrix advantage before
Kayla Northrup's basket at 5:09 for the Tigers.
Lilly Phillips hit a three from the top of the key, but Knoedl and Brady answered with layups and Brady added another basket.
Faith Humphrey made a triple for Sewanee in the final minute and the Tigers trailed, 32-27, at the half despite committing 15 turnovers and shooting just 9-of-26 from the field.
Sewanee will play on the road next Sunday in the quarterfinals of the SAA Championships against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
