SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Will Jennewein posted two hits and two RBIs and
Blake Pou homered in the first game while
Taj Donald tossed six strong innings in the second contest for Sewanee in 11-1 and 4-2 victories over Capital University in baseball action Friday at Montgomery Field.
The Tigers (2-0) banged out 11 hits in the opener, with
Sebastian Leinberger collected two hits and scoring twice while
John Bagwell and Will Irvin both drove in a pair of runs. Sewanee scored four runs in the third, five in the sixth and Pou belted a two-run homer in the seventh in the win.
Charlie Teel and Leinberger each collected two RBIs in the second contest, backing up Donald's six innings of work. The righthander (1-0) allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts. Teel drove in single runs in the first and seventh innings and Leinberger's two-run single in the second was enough for complete the doubleheader sweep, both nine-inning games.
Capital (0-2) loaded the bases in the eighth inning before grounding out to end the threat. Then in the ninth, the Comets put two runners on with one out before a groundout and a strikeout by
Will Berry saved the game.
Charlie Colson tripled down the rightfield line to open the first game for the Comets and scored on a chopper up the middle by Ty Clifton.
Leinberger lined a triple over the centerfielder's head to leadoff the third inning for the Tigers and scored on a bunt by Teel.
Owen Andress chopped a single over the third baseman's head and Bagwell walked, loading the bases. Irvin was hit, forcing in a run, and with two outs, Jennewein singled to right, pushing across two runs for a 4-1 advantage.
Jennewein started the sixth with a single to right and
Luke Short sacrificed the runner to second. Leinberger singled up the middle, plating a run, and with two outs, Teel was hit. Teel and Leinberger executed the double steal for a run and Andress walked before a two-run double to rightcenter from Bagwell. Irvin followed with an RBI single to left, extending the lead to 9-1.
In the seventh Short doubled to right and two batters later, Pou homered to deep rightcenter, pushing the advantage to 11-1.
Sewanee starter
Matt Munn struggled through the first two innings before settling down and getting through four frames, allowing one run on two hits. He walked four and struck out 10, retiring six of the last seven batters.
Henry Collins (1-0) picked up the win, tossing four shutout innings, giving up three hits with four walks and five strikeouts. The righthander stranded one runner in the first three frames and a pair of runners in the eighth.
Logan Detty (0-1) allowed four runs on four hits in 2.2 innings, suffering the loss. He walked two and struck out four. Colson collected two of the Comets five hits in the game.
Pou started the second game with a one-out double to leftcenter, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout from Teel.
In the third inning
Tyler Pinson beat out an infield single to the rightside and Short singled to rightcenter with one out. After a stolen base, Leinberger drove in both runners with a single to left for a 3-0 Sewanee lead.
Capital loaded the bases in the fourth with a single to left by Robby Harrison, a bunt single from Hunter Wilson and a walk to Bryce Kyees, but Donald struck out Trent Clark to end the threat.
The Comets broke through in the sixth after Harrison was hit with one out. Wilson followed with a two-run homer just to the right of dead centerfield, cutting the Sewanee lead to 3-2.
The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh when Short drew a leadoff walk and went to second on Leinberger's sac bunt. With two outs Teel singled to leftcenter, extending the advantage to 4-2.
Capital loaded the bases in the eighth after a double by Wilson and walks to Ryne McKinney and Kyees, but pinch-hitter Arnulfo Gonzalez grounded out to second to end the threat.
In the ninth Colson singled with one out and Kielan LaMarr was hit, but Clifton grounded into a fielder's choice and Berry struck out Harrison to end the game. Berry got the final four outs of the game for the save, giving up one hit and striking out two.
Tyler Bebout (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits in four innings. Reliever Trevor Woodyard worked four innings, giving up one run on one hit with four walks and six strikeouts.
