Tigers open season with 5-2 win over UT Southern

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee opened their season against UT Southern on Saturday afternoon in the Bruton Guerry Indoor courts as the Tigers came away with the win, 5-2.

Sewanee swept the doubles point to start the day. Andre-Remi Jakobi and Gil Weston claimed the first match with a 6-3 victory. Jordan Theron and Max Verellen secured the point by winning 7-5, while Quinn Wicklund and Ben Lammert capped off the doubles sweep with another 7-5 win.

In singles play, Theron dominated at the No. 1 spot, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory to extend Sewanee's lead. Freshman Ben Lammert battled hard after dropping the first set 4-6, forcing a third set with a 6-3 second-set win, but ultimately fell 3-6. At No. 3, Tallman Ramsey dropped the opening set but bounced back with a commanding 6-1 second set and sealed the match with a 6-4 win in the third, getting the Tigers within one. At No. 4, Wicklund dropped the third set after forcing the decider. Henry Hyden clinched the match for the Tigers with a 6-3 third set at No. 5, just seconds before Weston pulled out a straight sets win at No. 6.

Sewanee will face Cumberland in an exhibition match on Feb. 8 before starting a streak of facing five top-40 ranked teams in a row, starting with No. 32 Grinnell in Nashville on Feb. 14.
