Avaliani, Bakken lead Sewanee to 86-75 victory over Brevard

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Nikolas Avaliani posted a career high 33 points, and Jack Bakken added his second career double-double as the Tigers defeated Berea in Atlanta, Ga., on the first day of the Jack Berkshire Classic on Monday night.

Avaliani recorded 33 points with four steals and three rebounds, while Bakken added 14 points and 10 rebounds with three steals, two assists, and a block. Fletcher Bigham added 17 points and three rebounds with a block. Reid Carrier added 13 points with six assists, two steals, and two rebounds.

Sewanee used the first four minutes to take a 9-0 lead, with seven points from Avaliani and two from Bigham. Brevard cut the lead to two, using a 19-9 run over the following six minutes behind three triples and four different scorers. Bigham and Avaliani combined to score 11 of the next 13 points, with the other two coming from Tyler Baldwin, to push the advantage back to 29-18. The Tigers followed with another 7-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Avaliani and free throws from Avaliani and Carrier, to build a 15-point cushion with under six minutes to play in the first half. Both teams exchanged baskets down the stretch, as Avaliani poured in 23 first-half points and Bigham added 13, giving Sewanee a 50-36 lead at the break.

Brevard opened the second half with a three from Twain Wilson, but Carrier answered with a floating jumper to keep the Tigers in control. The Tornadoes hit another three to pull within 10 before Sewanee responded by trading baskets and then putting together a 9-5 run, with points from Philip Ryan, Jacob Amonett, Jack Bakken, and Avaliani. Avaliani continued to pace the offense, scoring in the paint and knocking down a three to maintain a double-digit lead midway through the half.

Sewanee extended the margin to as many as 18 following baskets from Bakken and a transition dunk by Bigham, while Treacy and Carrier facilitated the offense to keep the Tigers moving. Brevard attempted to chip away behind Wilson and Jadon Carnes from beyond the arc, but Sewanee answered each push with timely scores, including another three from Carrier and late baskets from Treacy and Avaliani. The Tigers closed the game strong, as Bigham finished a fast-break layup in the final minute to seal the 86-75 victory.

The Tigers face LaGrange in the final day of the tournament tomorrow at 1 PM before returning home for a conference stretch against Centre, Rhodes, and Millsaps at home.
