Carrier, Avaliani lead Tigers to road win against LaGrange

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Reid Carrier and Nikolas Avaliani each scored 17 points, including 12 in the second half from Avaliani, as the Sewanee Tigers earned a 66-58 road victory over LaGrange on day two of the Jack Berkshire Classic at Dorough Field House.

Fletcher Bigham recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, adding two steals and two blocks. Jack Bakken contributed seven points and seven rebounds, while Avaliani added four rebounds, three assists, a block, and a steal. Carrier finished with six rebounds and five assists.

Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm early, trading turnovers before LaGrange opened the scoring with a tip-in nearly two minutes into the contest. After a brief exchange of baskets, the game went scoreless for another stretch until Kani Rashied-Henry connected from beyond the arc. Jacob Amonett answered with a three of his own off an assist from Bakken.

The Panthers used a 7-2 run midway through the first half to build a 19-13 lead. Sewanee responded with a 13-6 surge, fueled by six points from Carrier, five from Bigham, and two from Avaliani, to take a one-point advantage with 7:11 remaining. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, and a free throw from Avaliani, followed by an assist to Aidan Treacy, gave the Tigers a three-point edge at the break.

Sewanee extended its momentum into the second half, holding LaGrange scoreless for the first three-and-a-half minutes while Bakken accounted for the Tigers' first three points. The Panthers cut the deficit to one with a jumper and an old-fashioned three-point play.

Defense dominated for the next several minutes before Bakken broke the drought at the line. LaGrange briefly regained the lead, but two free throws from Carrier sparked a decisive 15-4 run, highlighted by 11 points from Avaliani. The teams traded three-pointers late, and despite LaGrange scoring four of the final seven points, Sewanee held on to secure the 66-58 win.

Sewanee returns home to open conference play against Centre on Saturday at 3 p.m.
