Late surge sends Covenant past Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Fletcher Bigham and Nikolas Avaliani posted 17 points each, but Covenant used a 10-2 run late in the second half, defeating Sewanee on Wednesday night in the Barnes PE Center, 98-88.

Bigham added 11 rebounds, and Avaliani posted eight, while Reid Carrier recorded 15 points and Phillip Ryan added 14. Jack Bakken added 13 rebounds with eight points, and JD Gardner added 10 rebounds and nine points.

Sewanee (2–7) built a 19-5 advantage midway through the first half behind a 12-0 run sparked by three straight baskets from Fletcher Bigham and a three from Philip Ryan. The Tigers led by as many as 17 and shot 40 percent from beyond the arc in the opening period, but Covenant (2-8) closed the half on a 20-7 surge, including a deep three at the buzzer, to tie the game at 48-48 heading into the break.

The second half remained tight through the opening minutes, with Sewanee pushing ahead 61-53 after a Reid Carrier three and a layup from Aidan Treacy. However, the Scots responded with a decisive 22-7 run fueled by seven Covenant players registering points. Covenant scored 37 points off turnovers and finished the night shooting 46 percent from the field.

Covenant was led by Logan Patterson's 23 points and five steals, while Noah Pence and Korbin Long each added 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Sewanee dominated the glass 61-40 and scored 46 points in the paint, but Sewanee shot just 15% from behind the arc and Covenant's pressure and perimeter shooting proved the difference late.

The Tigers return to action on Dec. 29-30 at the Jack Berkshire Classic, facing Brevard and LaGrange in Atlanta, Ga.
