SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey netted 18 points, leading four players in double figures, and
Cydney Wright posted 16 points and nine rebounds in a 68-63 victory over Huntingdon College on Saturday in women's basketball action in Montgomery, Ala.
The Tigers (3-2) trailed by 12 points early in the second quarter but a 16-3 run helped Sewanee battle back to a one-point deficit at the half. The Tigers took a 10-point lead in the fourth period and hung on for the win.
Hannah Cleveland and
Janie Boyd each finished with 10 points and Cleveland added eight boards.
Makayla Ford recorded seven points in the early going for the Hawks (0-3), giving the home team a 13-6 lead. Falvey and
Eliza Everett posted baskets for the Tigers, but Ford added a field goal and two free throws before a layup by Kennedi McCray gave Huntingdon a 23-14 advantage at the end of one period.
McCray netted one foul shot and Dalyce Sanders collected a layup, pushing the lead to a dozen points, with 7:30 remaining in the first half. Falvey started a 16-3 run with a 3-pointer and Boyd followed with a three. Cleveland made two foul shots and
Micha Lovelace converted an old-fashioned 3-point play.
Wright posted a layup and
Brianna Keating-Rendon's triple with 3:40 to go in the half put the Tigers in front, 30-29. Kiya Crayton recorded consecutive baskets for the Hawks to end the spurt and Ashanti Thomas' layup put Huntingdon ahead, 35-34, at intermission.
Wright and Cleveland registered field goals and Falvey nailed a 3-pointer to open the second half for Sewanee. Boyd added a layup and Falvey completed an old-fashioned 3-point play, pushing the lead to 46-39, and the Tigers took a 50-45 advantage to the final 10 minutes.
Wright collected a layup and Falvey hit another 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter, stretching the lead to 10, but Sanders answered with a three and Deshauna Foote's two free throws and a layup cut the deficit to three for the Hawks.
Charity Shaw made it a one-point game with a jumper, but Cleveland's layup and a 3-pointer by Boyd gave Sewanee a six-point edge midway through the period. Foote connected on four free throws to make it a two-point game and a triple by Sanders put Huntingdon in front by one with 3:34 to go.
Wright answered with a layup for the Tigers and added two foul shots with 1:28 remaining, but then she missed two free throws with 41 ticks on the clock. Foote's two shots at the charity stripe pulled the Hawks within a point again with 37 seconds to play, but Cleveland answered with a jumper for Sewanee.
Foote missed a three for Huntingdon and Wright posted a layup on the other end in the final 10 seconds for the final points of the game.
Foote led the Hawks with 12 points, Ford collected 11 and Sanders finished with 10.
Sewanee hosts Warren Wilson next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Juhan Gymnasium.
