Falvey nets 24, Cleveland posts double-double in Tigers win

SEWANEE, Tenn.Olivia Falvey posted 24 points and Hannah Cleveland added 23 points and 11 rebounds in Sewanee's 95-76 victory over Warren Wilson in women's basketball action here Saturday at Juhan Gymnasium.
 
The Tigers (4-2) jumped out to a 24-11 advantage after one period and outscored the Owls (0-9) by just six points in the final three quarters. The contest included 38 turnovers, 25 by Sewanee, and 53 foul shots thanks to 46 combined fouls on the two teams.
 
The Tigers used a 17-3 spurt in the first quarter to take control of the game. Warren Wilson did not post a field goal from the 8:31 mark until the final minute of the period. Falvey made a 3-pointer from the corner to start the run and Brianna Keating-Rendon recorded the first of three triples in the quarter.
 
Cleveland and Eliza Everett each netted baskets and the final two 3-pointers from Keating-Rendon put the Tigers in front, 22-7, with 1:23 left in the period. Briah Clarke's field goal with 46 seconds to play in the quarter ended the drought for Warren Wilson and Ori Galloway added another bucket for the visitors before two free throws by Cleveland with 1.8 seconds left gave Sewanee a 24-11 advantage after 10 minutes.
 
Everett grabbed 16 rebounds for the Tigers, Grace Gavin recorded eight points and 12 boards and Keating-Rendon made five 3-pointers for 15 points, with all three players contributing off the bench.
 
Tatyana Lewis led the Owls with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Jordan McGhee contributed 16 points and Galloway added 10.
 
Falvey posted a pair of layups and two foul shots in the first two-and-a-half minutes of the second period and netted two more foul shots at the 6:08 mark. Warren Wilson kept pace behind 3-pointers from Nesha Oliver and Lewis and two baskets by McGhee. Cleveland got a putback and then made a triple, stretching the lead to 45-27.
 
Lewis scored twice and Galloway added a layup, cutting the deficit to 12 to open the second half. Marielle McNeal registered a putback and Galloway completed an old-fashioned 3-point play, making it a nine-point game four minutes into the third quarter.
 
Keating-Rendon made back-to-back 3-pointers after a timeout by the Tigers and Cleveland's layup and free throw pushed the lead back to 18. Warren Wilson did not score for more than three minutes until a layup by Galloway with 2:19 left in the period and Cleveland's putback in the final five seconds gave the Tigers a 70-52 advantage after three quarters.
 
Micha Lovelace hit a turnaround jumper and a triple to start the final period for Sewanee, though Oliver and Lewis answered with 3-pointers for the Owls. Falvey's old-fashioned 3-point play and Elliott Porter's triple from the wing before a putback by Cleveland stretched the lead to 83-58, the biggest of the game for the Tigers.
 
McGhee posted four points and McNeal and Lewis each made baskets during an 8-0 run for Warren Wilson, but that was as close the Owls would get the rest of the way.
 
Sewanee hosts Belhaven University next Saturday at 1 p.m. in its next game.
