White leads Sewanee to sweep over Oglethorpe

SEWANEE, Tenn. –  Mollie White recorded 15 kills and hit .464, while Ella Reynolds added three aces as Sewanee swept Oglethorpe in three sets Saturday morning inside Juhan Gymnasium.

White also tallied three blocks, and Savannah Gann contributed 12 kills, eight digs, and a block assist. Sophia Caruso anchored the defense with 18 digs and five assists, while Bela Cancado and Keird Baldwin added eight and seven digs, respectively. Emma Meyer dished out 33 assists to go with eight digs, and Suna Merkler added key kills throughout the match.

The Tigers opened the first set with a 3-0 run highlighted by two White kills and maintained control throughout. A 6-1 stretch, featuring two more kills from White, one from Merkler, and a block by Reynolds and Gann, extended the lead to 13-8. Another 7-1 surge capped by a Reynolds kill sealed the opening set, 25-18.

Oglethorpe jumped ahead early in the second set with a 6-3 run, but Sewanee responded with an 8-2 rally fueled by seven kills, three from White, two from Gann, and one each from Reynolds and Ellison. The Petrels threatened late with a 5-1 push, but the Tigers closed the door with kills from Gann and White and an ace from Reynolds to take the set, 25-21.

Sewanee dominated the third set, holding Oglethorpe to -.029 hitting en route to a decisive 25-12 win. After an early Petrels run, the Tigers regained control with a 6-1 spurt featuring kills from Gann and Meyer and a block by White and Ellison. Charlotte Lee then served during a 5-0 run highlighted by four straight kills, two from White, and one each from Reynolds and Gann. Another extended 8-0 stretch, powered by kills from Ellison, White, Gann, and Radford, plus a block from White and Ellison and an ace from Reynolds, pushed Sewanee ahead 23-10. Josey King put down the final kill to clinch the sweep.

The Tigers return to action Sunday at noon when they host Berry College. Sewanee continues its seven-match home stand next weekend with contests against MUW and Covenant on Friday, Nov. 11, for Senior Day.
