Tigers top No. 13 Berry for first-ever win over Vikings

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Mollie White and Savannah Gann each posted 15 kills as Sewanee upset No. 13-ranked Berry in four sets on Sunday afternoon at Juhan Gymnasium, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 26-24.

White hit .400 on the day with four blocks and four digs, while Gann added 11 digs and an ace. Anna Ellison recorded 11 kills, five blocks, and a dig, and Suna Merkler tallied 10 kills with eight digs and three total blocks. Emma Meyer paced the offense with 41 assists, 12 digs, and three kills. Defensively, Sophia Caruso anchored the back row with 21 digs and five assists, and Kiera Baldwin chipped in 12 digs.

The win marks the first in program history for Sewanee over nationally ranked Berry.

Berry edged out Sewanee in the opening set, using a 4-1 run to take control midway through. The Tigers made a late push behind three kills from White and an ace from Gann to close the gap, but the Vikings held on for a 25-22 win.

Set two featured 15 ties and six lead changes. With the score even at 23-23, Sewanee capitalized on a Berry error before Merkler sealed the set with a kill off a Caruso assist to even the match.

In the third frame, the Tigers built a commanding 21-13 lead thanks to a 9-3 run fueled by kills from Gann, Merkler, White, and Ellison. Berry rallied with a 6-1 surge late, but Meyer connected with Merkler for the set-clinching kill to give Sewanee the 2-1 advantage.

The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle. After trailing early, Sewanee strung together an 8-2 run highlighted by two kills and a block from Merkler, taking a 12-11 lead. Berry regained the edge, but the Tigers answered with a 7-1 stretch powered by two White kills and a block from Ellison to go up 19-14. Berry tied the frame at 23, but a Merkler kill gave Sewanee a match point. Following a brief tie at 24-all, White's kill and a Berry attack error clinched the historic victory for the Tigers.

Sewanee (15-10, 8-6) will close out the regular season next Friday, hosting MUW and Covenant at Juhan Gymnasium.
