SEWANEE, Tenn. – Centre goalkeeper Martin Cortez saved a penalty kick by
Stokes McConnell and the Colonels cleared a shot away from the goal line, both in the first half, playing to a scoreless draw against Sewanee in the regular season finale for both teams in men's soccer action here Saturday night at Puett Field.
The Tigers (12-3-4, 3-2-2 SAA) had two great chances in the first half but the Colonels (2-8-7, 1-4-2) kept Sewanee off the scoreboard in both instances.
Off a corner kick,
Edward Kennedy's header was redirected off the goal line by a Centre defender in the 18
th minute and McConnell's rebound sailed high. The Colonels nearly found the back of the net three minutes later when Ryan O'Hara crossed from the right. The ball rolled across the box and Jacob Tyler's shot was deflected by
Nathan Vanhoeve and then drilled the post.
In the 37
th minute, Lörinc Loboda was tackled in the box on a corner kick, but McConnell's penalty kick was saved by Cortez and the teams headed to halftime scoreless.
Neither team created much in the way of quality scoring chances in the second half, though
Grayson White's free kick from 25 yards in the final 10 minutes was saved and Cortez jumped on a possible rebound before any Sewanee player could get there.
Sewanee outshot the Colonels, 14-6, in the match and Cortez finished with six saves.
The SAA Championships begin Thursday in Georgetown, Texas, with seeds and match times announced Sunday.
