SEWANEE, Tenn. – Katie Dullye headed in a deflection off the crossbar in the 59
th minute but Sewanee missed numerous other chances in the second half in a 1-1 draw in women's soccer action on a rainy Sunday here at Puett Field.
The Tigers (9-1-4, 3-0-3) outshot the Vikings, 24-8, in the match, including 17-4 in the second half, taking 14 corner kicks in the match. Sewanee converted one of those chances, with a corner kick from
Stella Martin hitting a Berry defender and then the crossbar before Dullye redirected in into the net.
The Tigers drew nine more corners after the goal but was unable to find the back of the net.
Cassis Yappen's blast from inside the box in the 70
th minute sailed wide right and the squad put together a great combination play in the 84
th minute.
Fiamma del Balzo cut across to intercept a deflection and played
Mia Ramirez wide left. She crossed to a streaking
Susie Whitsett, but the ball was played away from Whitsett inside the box before she could take a shot.
Kylene Monaghan also had a chance from outside the box that was saved and squirted away but out of bounds. Berry goalkeeper Kate Hill finished with seven saves while Sewanee's
Avery Kievit posted two saves, one in each half.
Berry (7-3-4, 1-2-3) took a lead in the 55
th minute when Ide Strickland's shot from just inside the box on the right was saved by Kievit, but Nicole Knight was there to poke in the rebound. The Tigers answered quickly and dominated the remainder of the period but could not get the go-ahead goal.
Rivers Carney got a left-footed chance just inside the box in the fifth minute and Sewanee had three corner kicks in the first 15 minutes but Monaghan's shot sailed over the net from near the penalty spot for the only good chance. Whitsett also collected a chance on a deflection but it was saved.
Berry's Giselle Aitken drilled a low and hard shot from the top of the box in the 25
th minute, with Kievet making a diving save for the only shot on goal of the period for the Vikings.
Sewanee's last chance of the half came in the 41
st minute on another deflection by
Pope Scurlock, but it was cleared away from the line by a Berry defender.
The Tigers end the regular season next Saturday, hosting Centre College at 3 p.m. here at Puett Field.
