Cold shooting leads to road loss for women's hoops

MOUNT BERRY, Ga.Cydney Wright netted 12 points but Sewanee shot just 19 percent from the field and 3-for-27 from 3-point range in a 76-32 loss to Berry College in women's basketball action here Thursday night at the Cage Recreation Center.
 
The Tigers (7-7, 0-1 SAA) trailed 19-16 midway through the second period but scored just one point the rest of the quarter, missing four shots and committing a pair of turnovers. Sewanee then posted only three points in the first seven minutes of the third period, with the Vikings putting together a 23-3 run over the quarter-plus of game time to pull away in the contest.
 
The Tigers committed 13 second-half turnovers that Berry turned into 14 points. Sewanee was also hurt on the offensive boards as well, with the Vikings grabbing 25 and converting those into 28 second-chance points.
 
Wright collected 12 points and seven rebounds but no other Sewanee player finished with more than five points.
 
Sylvia Kahoro paced the Vikings with 18 points while Elly Callihan recorded 12 points and 11 boards and Karlee Armstrong added 14 points off the bench.
 
Wright made two foul shots to open the game and added a layup before a corner 3-pointer from Grace Gavin put the Tigers in front, 7-6. Kenadie Lee's basket gave the Vikings the lead with just over a minute remaining in the period, but Wright scored again in the final 60 seconds for a 10-9 Sewanee edge after the first quarter.
 
Armstrong was fouled on a 3-pointer and connected on all three attempts to start the second period for Berry and she posted a short jumper and 1-of-2 free throws midway through the quarter. The Tigers were unable to get in the scoring column, missing their first seven attempts, until a Wright basket with 5:36 before halftime and a layup from Gavin pulled Sewanee within 17-14.
 
Lilly Phillips had a fastbreak layup and Wright recorded 1-of-2 foul shots with 3:38 left in the period, but Sewanee did not score for the rest of the half. Berry netted the final eight points of the quarter, including a putback from Armstrong and field goals from Callihan, Lee and Kahoro for a 29-17 Vikings advantage at intermission.
 
The two teams combined to make only 1-of-28 from 3-point range in the half, including 1-for-13 for the Tigers, with 16 combined turnovers. Sewanee shot just 19 percent overall from the field in the first two quarters (6-of-32). Berry hurt Sewanee on the offensive glass with 12 boards leading to 11 points.
 
Lee netted the first 3-pointer of the game for the Vikings three minutes into the third quarter and Kahoro collected three field goals in the first five minutes of the period, extending the Berry lead to 40-20. Callihan and Armstrong each posted two free throws and Armstrong added a layup to end the quarter with the Vikings ahead, 50-23.
 
At this time Sunday's game at Oglethorpe remains scheduled for 1 p.m. ET in Atlanta, Ga.
