Falvey's 20 points not enough in road loss versus Oglethorpe

Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn.Olivia Falvey scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench but Sewanee had another bad shooting outing and dropped a 79-56 decision to Oglethorpe University in women's basketball action Sunday in Atlanta, Ga.
 
The Tigers (7-8, 0-2 SAA) fell behind early, 12-3, but trailed only 15-12 at the end of the first period. Falvey netted the first eight points of the second quarter and a 3-pointer from Kayla Northrup gave Sewanee a 23-22 edge midway through the period.
 
Oglethorpe used a 20-5 run to end the first half, taking a 14-point advantage at the break, but the Tigers pulled within nine late in the third quarter. The Stormy Petrels increased the lead to 15 before Sewanee posted the first five points of the fourth period, including a layup from Cydney Wright and a 3-pointer by Brianna Keating-Rendon.
 
Oglethorpe answered with an 11-1 spurt with five points by Keimarya Rivera and six from Sheraton Foster, stretching its lead back to 20 and essentially ending the contest.
 
Wright was the only other Sewanee player in double figures with 10 before fouling out early in the final period. The Tigers shot just 27 percent overall from the field and 5-for-27 from 3-point range.
 
Foster led four Oglethorpe player in double-digits with 26 points and 11 boards while Rivera finished with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Mia Geveke collected 13 points with four 3-pointers and Anna Conza added 12 points. The Stormy Petrels shot 9-of-22 from behind the arc and 26-for-31 at the foul line in the victory.
 
Sewanee made only 1-of-6 from the field with five turnovers in the first five minutes of the game, with the Stormy Petrels taking a 12-3 advantage behind two 3-pointers from Geveke and baskets by Foster and Rivera.
 
Elizabeth Luick made another triple for Oglethorpe, stretching its lead to 15-5, before the Tigers netted the final seven points of the period. Lilly Phillips hit a 3-pointer and two field goals from Wright in the final 90 seconds cut the deficit to 15-12.
 
Falvey posted a personal 8-0 scoring run to open the second quarter for the Tigers with three layups and two free throws, extending the spurt from the end of the first period and giving Sewanee a 20-15 advantage two minutes into the quarter.
 
Geveke's triple ended the run but a 3-pointer from Northrup put the Tigers back in front, 23-22, midway through the period. Sewanee registered just five points for the rest of the quarter and the Stormy Petrels posted a 20-5 spurt.
 
Rivera netted a field goal and an old-fashioned 3-point play and Geveke added her fourth triple of the half. Conza made four free throws and another basket before a triple by Guick stretched the Oglethorpe lead to 42-27.
 
Zoe Sedo recorded two foul shots and Wright made 3-of-4 for Sewanee's only points, the last two free throws by Wright coming in the final 10 seconds for a 42-28 home team advantage at the break.
 
Falvey's layup at the 5:47 mark of the third quarter was the first field goal for either team in the period and she added another, but Foster collected a pair of baskets and Conza's two free throws gave the Stormy Petrels a 49-33 advantage.
 
Falvey netted 3-of-4 foul shots and another bucket before a layup from Faith Humphrey cut deficit to 49-40 before Foster answered with a 3-pointer, pushing the Oglethorpe lead back to double-digits. Gonza added four free throws and the home team led, 57-42, at the end of three quarters.
 
Wright's layup and a 3-pointer from Keating-Rendon to start the fourth period pulled the Tigers within 57-47, but an 11-1 run followed by Oglethorpe. Wright picked up two fouls in a matter of seconds, fouling out of the game at the 7:47 mark.
 
Rivera netted two free throws and Foster collected three baskets before a 3-pointer by Rivera increased the lead to 68-48 with five minutes to play.
 
Sewanee returns home next weekend, taking on Rhodes College on Friday and Hendrix College on Sunday at Juhan Gymnasium.
