SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Olivia Falvey netted a career-high 27 points and Sewanee made 9-of-15 from 3-point range in the second half in a 96-49 victory over Salem College in women's basketball action here Saturday at Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (7-6) scored a combined 62 points in the second and third quarters, running away from the Spirits in the process. Falvey collected 26 of her 27 points in the middle periods, hitting five 3-pointers among her 10 field goals, and added nine rebounds.
She led four Sewanee players in double figures, including 17 points, 10 boards and five assists by
Cydney Wright, 12 points from
Elliott Porter and 11 by
Hannah Cleveland. The Tigers forced 25 Salem turnovers in the contest, turning those into 24 points, collected 44 points in the paint and dished out 28 assists on 36 made field goals as a team.
Nicole Hester paced the Spirits with 25 points and 14 rebounds, hitting 11-of-24 shots from the field. Amy Velediaz-Pedroza, Jade Ware and Anayah Noell each contributed eight points.
The Spirits held an early lead after a 3-pointer by Velediaz-Pedroza and a layup from Hester, but Salem failed to score over the final eight minutes of the opening period. Cleveland posted a basket before a triple by
Brianna Keating-Rendon.
Wright and Cleveland each netted two foul shots and Keating-Rendon recorded another three for a 15-5 lead after one quarter.
Wright scored six of the first eight points in the second period and added one free throw and another field goal, stretching the Sewanee advantage to 28-13. Hester's old-fashioned 3-point play and a layup plus a basket and two foul shots for Ware preceded a flurry at the end of the quarter from Falvey, who netted three field goals and a 3-pointer around a triple by
Audrey Coulter and a layup from Porter for a 44-20 lead at the half.
Wright collected 13 points and Falvey registered 12 but the Tigers made just 4-of-18 from behind the arc. Hester and Velediaz-Porter each posted seven for the Spirits.
Falvey stayed hot in the third period, starting with a layup before two field goals from Wright. After a layup from
Faith Humphrey, Falvey posted a personal eight-point run with a pair of 3-pointers.
Lilly Phillips and Cleveland added triples and Falvey made another at the end of the quarter, pushing the advantage to 76-34.
Sewanee opens Southern Athletic Association action this Friday, traveling to Berry College for a 5 p.m. CT contest.
