SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Brianna Fee netted the game-winner in the 74
th minute and Sewanee overcame a slugging start, pulling out a 1-0 victory over Transylvania in women's soccer action here Sunday at Puett Field.
The Tigers (3-0-1) were unable to connect in the midfield and in the final third for much of the match, but freshman
Arianna Shirak won a ball between two defenders and passed forward to Fee in the final 20 minutes of the second half. Fee dribbled left and her blast from 25 yards went under the hands of Pioneers goalkeeper Carrie Stevens and into the bottom left corner of the net for her fourth goal in four outings this season.
Olivia Fee's shot from distance in the 23
rd minute was knocked away by Stevens. The Pioneers nearly found the back of the net after a nice cross from Lilia Steen to the back post just minutes later, but
Olivia Fee was there to clear it away. Transylvania's Ciana Araya came on and immediately picked up a deflected ball but her shot sailed over the crossbar.
Ashlyn Richards' free kick from 35 yards just flew over the crossbar for the Tigers as well in the 38
th minute and the teams went to intermission with no score.
Olivia Fee lofted a shot from 40 yards in the 70
th minute, but Stevens made a nice save on that and finished with six saves just a few minutes before the game-winner.
Sewanee plays at Maryville College on Wednesday and at Mt. St. Joseph next Saturday.
