SEWANEE, Tenn. – Trevor Reichman, Jr., scored in the first half for Sewanee but a late penalty kick sent the Tigers to a 1-1 draw against Hampden-Sydney in men's soccer action here Saturday at Puett Field.
In the team's second match in less than 24 hours, the Tigers (0-3-1) scored in the 16
th minute and missed a couple of other good chances to add to the lead in the opening half.
Nathan Vanhoeve made saves in the first 15 minutes for the Tigers on shots from Mason Dudley and Tyler Petz and another shot by Dudley was saved before a corner kick from HSC's Jaques Lavielle was knocked away by the goalkeeper.
Sewanee took the lead in the 16
th minute on a goal by Reichman, Jr., a shot from just inside the box in the middle of the goal on a cross from
Stokes McConnell, who crossed from the right.
Tyler Cozzie missed an opportunity to add to the lead after a free kick, with his header bouncing to the right of the net, and a left-footed shot by McConnell was saved as well in the 28
th minute.
The Tigers spent most of the half on the defensive, with fatigue setting in over the final 25 minutes. Vanhoeve made three saves during that stretch and finished with six. Petz had a drive from the right side that was knocked away and Mason's chance from the top of the box was also saved.
Lavielle converted a penalty kick with 6:07 remaining in the match after a shove in the box on another offensive push by Hampden-Sydney. Lavielle had one last chance in the last three minutes but his shot was deflected away.
HSC goalkeeper Wills Huddleston collected four saves.
Sewanee plays at Maryville College on Wednesday and at Covenant College next Saturday.
