Sewanee Battles in Tight Sets, Falls to Hendrix in Three

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Suna Merkler led the Tigers' offense with a career-high 12 kills, and Savannah Gann added seven, but Sewanee fell in a hard-fought three-set match to Hendrix on Monday night in Conway, Arkansas.

The opening set was a marathon, with both teams trading points in a back-and-forth battle. Despite Sewanee's 13 kills and four aces, the Warriors edged out the Tigers 32-30. The Tigers posted a .130 hitting percentage in the set, while Hendrix tallied 19 kills with a .220 clip to claim the first set.

In the second set, Sewanee built a 19-16 lead but couldn't hold off a late surge from the Warriors, who scored the next seven points to take control. Hendrix finished the set with two straight kills to win 25-22. Both teams' hitting percentages dropped in the second frame, with Sewanee managing seven kills and four errors.

The third set saw Hendrix take an early lead at 4-4 and hold it for the remainder of the match. A run of three unanswered points at 17-19 put the Warriors in position to close out the contest. Sewanee fought back with a Gann kill and a Hendrix error to cut the lead to three, but two kills and a block from the Warriors sealed the set and the match, 25-21.

Gann added an assist and a service ace to her seven kills and 10 digs, while Marian Kennedy led the Sewanee defense with 12 digs, adding two kills, an ace, and an assist. Emma Meyer contributed 17 assists and eight digs, and Sophia Caruso chipped in with nine digs.

The Tigers finish out their road conference play this weekend, traveling to Berry and Oglethorpe on Saturday and Sunday, before returning home for their first home matches in over a month to open conference play in Juhan Gymnasium against Millsaps on Sunday, October 13 and Centre on October 14.
