SEWANEE, Tenn. – Ryan Winkler scored in the first 15 minutes in both halves for 20
th-ranked Emory University in a 2-0 victory over Sewanee in men's soccer action Wednesday night at Puett Field.
The Tigers (1-4-2), playing their fourth ranked opponent in seven outings this season, allowed goals in the first 15 minutes of both halves to Winkler and the Eagles (3-3-1). Sewanee controlled the ball much better in the second half and created several scoring chances but were unable to find the back of the net against Keirnan Skelly, who finished with one save against six shots.
Emory got on the board first in the 11
th minute, with Josh Grand playing a ball wide to Lorenzo Avalos, who crossed into the box to Winkler. Winkler deked one defender and hit a left-footed shot from the center of the goal into the bottom right corner for the goal.
The Eagles controlled possession for almost the entire first half but only created five shots, two of those on headers from corners. Adeyemi Oni entered the contest and immediately missed a chance on a cross right at the doorstep of the goal and Winkler had another chance later in the period but the shot was blocked by a diving Sewanee defender in the box.
The Tigers' only chance of the period came at the 31-minute mark when
Noah Bjorkman's header off a free kick sailed over the crossbar. Otherwise Sewanee was unable to keep control of the ball, especially, in the midfield.
Six minutes into the second half
Tyler Cozzie crossed to the middle of the box but
Alpha Bah's shot was blocked, leading to the first corner of the match for the Tigers.
Emory increased the lead in the 61
st minute, with Grand crossing after a throw-in to the top of the six-yard box, where Winkler headed in his second goal.
In the 67
th minute
Luke Manley headed a ball down the rightside to Isaac Rashed and his shot was saved by Skelly, leading to another corner. Sewanee's final good scoring chance came in the 78
th minute, with a Cozzie throw-in down the leftside to Bjorkman, who volleyed the ball to the middle, but Bah's attempt went off his leg to the right of the net.
Nathan Vanhoeve registered three saves against 12 shots in net for the Tigers.
Sewanee travels to Birmingham, Ala., this Saturday for a 3 p.m. match against Belhaven University.
