Field Hockey drops season opener in Maryland

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee Field Hockey began its 2024 season against Stevenson in Owings Mills, Md., falling 3-0. Despite strong defensive efforts and a solid performance from their goalkeepers, the Tigers struggled to match Stevenson's offensive pressure.

Addison Cassada, Margaret Haskell, and Shepard Ramsey each registered a shot for Sewanee, but the Mustangs' dominance was evident as they outshot the Tigers 21-3, with 15 of those on goal. Additionally, Stevenson had a significant edge in corners, earning 11 compared to Sewanee's three.

Goalkeepers Claire Damare and Taylor Klesel had a busy day, with Damare making eight saves and Klesel adding three. Their efforts helped to limit Stevenson to just three goals, despite the Mustangs' persistent attack.

Stevenson capitalized in the third quarter, scoring all their goals during that period on 13 shots. Sewanee's defense tightened up in the final quarter, allowing only one shot on goal and taking a shot of their own, but could not close the gap.

The Tigers will look to regroup as they travel to face St. Mary's College of Maryland on Sunday at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT
