SEWANEE, Tenn. –
Tyler Scott scored in the eighth minute on an assist from
Will Pucek, but Gettysburg College found the back of the net twice in less than 12 minutes in the middle of the match and held off Sewanee, 2-1, in the men's soccer season opener for both teams Friday in Gettysburg, Pa.
Scott's header off a cross from Pucek gave the Tigers an early lead and it remained 1-0 until late in the half. Aidan Muller's cross from near the endline got past Sewanee goalkeeper
Nathan Vanhoeve and Cole McCartney knotted the match at one in the 36
th minute.
Gettysburg took the lead for good just over two minutes into the second half, with a shot by Dylan Capazario deflecting off a Tigers defender and bouncing past Vanhoeve. Ean Malay tapped in the ball near the goal line at 47:01.
Sewanee posted nine corner kicks and controlled the ball in its offensive end for almost the entire second half but still mustered only eight total shots, four on goal against Gettysburg goalie Leandro Riberio. Vanhoeve finished with six saves against 10 total shots from the Bullets.
The Tigers finish the two-match swing to open the season Sunday at 10 a.m. CT at Johns Hopkins University.
