Theron and Wicklund advance to final four of NCAA tournament

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund defeated Tristan Bradley and Reid Staples of Bowdoin in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Individual Doubles Championships. 

Theron and Wicklund took the first set 6-4 against the three-seed as they got out to an early break in the first set. 

Both teams held their serve to start the second set as the Polar Bears were up in the second set 3-4. Bowdin got a break to go up 5-3 off of a deciding deuce point, but the Tigers broke back the next game off of another deuce point for a 4-5 match. The Tigers held their serve in the next game at 40-15, dropping just one point for 5 all. Both teams won their serves off of a deciding deuce point for 6 all to force a second set tiebreaker. Bowdin got out to an early start in the tiebreaker 4-1, before the play was stopped for a rain delay. After an hour delay, they resumed the second set tiebreaker. The Polar Bears came out strong, winning the tiebreaker to force a deciding third set with a 7-2 score. 

Sewanee got ahead in the deciding set with an early break for a 3-1 lead, however, Bowdin broke back and held for three all. The Tigers won the next three games to take the set and the match and move into the semifinals of the NCAA tournament. 

The NCAA will play both the semifinals and the finals, tomorrow, Tuesday, May 28 as Theron and Wicklund will face Aiden Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Noon. Ethan Green and Kael Shah of Denison and Tyler Haddorf and Gage Gohl of Gustavus Adolphus will play in the other semifinals. The finals are scheduled for 2 p.m.
